April 2022

Message From Director Lisa Sax Mahoney

Spring has sprung. It has finally stopped snowing, grass is becoming greener, trees are blossoming, and everything seems to have new life. At NCCRS, we are also experiencing a sense of rebirth and renewal. Since the start of 2022, many new and exciting things have been taking shape. In January, we welcomed a top-notch new evaluation associate, Richelle LaPolt, while saying goodbye to Carol Creevy after 17 wonderful years. In February, we rolled out a revamped comprehensive orientation program for new evaluators, and continued our rebranding efforts with the creation of a new marketing packet, tri-fold brochure, and palm cards. And just last month, we added five faculty members to our vast network of evaluators, included three more universities on the list of institutions of higher education that recognize NCCRS credit recommendations, and led two presentations on credit for prior learning. As the days become longer and warmer, our hope is that spring will prove to be reenergizing for us all.

"Microcredentials" Gain New Momentum

An article in The Hechinger Report posits the urgency for getting people back to work has given new momentum to "microcredentials." Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX states, "People are looking for shorter forms of learning during this time. They don’t know whether they have two months, three months. They’ve lost their jobs. For them, the ability to earn a microcredential within a few months and improve their potential to get hired as we come out of COVID becomes much more important."

Employers Are Changing

How They View Training

Many of the largest employers in the country are changing how they approach offering training and education benefits to their employees. An article in EdSurge states in some cases it’s to respond to how fast technology is advancing, and a sense that workers need retraining more often than in the past. But it’s also because there’s a bit of an arms race among large employers to offer education perks and a post-pandemic rethink by many employees about what they want from their jobs.

Credentials Must Be Stackable, Not "Sleestak-able"

With a nod to the ridiculously unconvincing reptilian creatures from the 1970's television series, Land of the Lost, an article in Forbes suggests that when colleges and universities make up short-term credentials, they're not stackable, they're "Sleestak-able."
