The first year as DS of the North Coast was one of listening, learning, and discerning. That process continues, but a couple of observations are worth sharing. First, this community of disciples we call the North Coast District is an amazing bunch! You follow the Risen Christ in a rich tapestry of ways. There are faith expressions popping up all over our district that open the eyes, thrill the heart, and encourage my soul. The beauty of God’s people pursuing a vibrant, authentic faith is a renewing sight, and that is sorely needed. I also recognize that so many people in our neighborhoods are desperate for authenticity, compassion, and hope in a world that can feel lonely and divided. We have a profound opportunity to offer others the love and compassion that God has freely offered us. And that is happening every day, in so many creative ways, throughout our district!
My challenge to every congregation -- and to each one of you! -- is to begin a new faith community within the next three months. Many of you are doing that in extraordinary ways. Many of you have creative, Spirit-birthed ideas in your hearts that have not yet been brought to fruition. This is the moment! What is the unique call God has placed on your heart to bring compassion and grace to people in your community? What is a hobby or interest you love that might provide an authentic starting point for fellowship and conversation? What gift, skill, or knowledge do you possess that might be a source of hope and connection to the people around you? This is a moment to pay careful attention to God’s work within us. This is a moment to listen deeply to our neighbors who are looking for genuine community and love. This is a moment to invite the guidance of the Spirit in starting a new expression of faith community. My prayers are with you as you embrace this kingdom-building work!
