Back-to-School: Culture and Climate

August may be the start of the school year for many students, parents, teachers, and administrators, but perceptions about a school’s climate and culture (and their effects on a school) developed long before.

While prevalent across the country, students of different races and ethnicities experience chronic absenteeism at different rates. A recent USDE report notes that "students who regularly attend school gain skills such as persistence, problem-solving, and the ability to work with others." So how are school districts addressing the issue?

Researchers often focus on school climate over culture. That is probably because “climate” is easier to operationalize, including the attitudes, behaviors, and experiences of the students, teachers, and staff.
