Equity Express: Year One

-Meria J. Carstarphen

Every edition of The Equity Express provides me with the opportunity to reflect on significant federal, state, and local programs, policies, and initiatives; significant research; and momentous milestones and events that have impacted the lives of students, families, teachers, and/or school communities.

Numbers That Matter:

Family and School Community Engagement

-Bill Caritj, Staff Writer

Substantial research has been conducted to examine the relationship between parental engagement in their child’s education and their success in school. A meta-analysis (Jeynes 2005 & 2015) found that parental engagement is associated with 20%-30% improvement in academic outcomes. The challenge is scaling up such efforts to impact larger numbers of students.

ENOUGH: Engaging Organizations, Unions, Governments and Households

-Walter Fields, Community Engagement & Public Policy Liaison, FSTAR Pillar, NCEED.

An examination of the ENOUGH Act, a comprehensive, community-focused initiative spanning 12 Maryland counties, including rural, suburban, and urban areas. The program supports 27 community organizations in a state where 150,000 children live in poverty.
