An Important Message for NCFlex Participants

August 2024

Save the Date: Open Enrollment is Sept. 30-Oct. 25, 2024 for the 2025 plan year.

August is National Wellness Month

Celebrate National Wellness Month with these five opportunities to lead a physically, mentally and financially healthier life that state employees can take advantage of year-round.

Wellness Webinars: Join these virtual events monthly for easy ways to improve your mental and physical health. Discover nutritious recipes, get the inside scoop on topical health and safety issues and learn more about taking care of your mind, not just your body, in these valuable sessions. Next up, we're exploring the basics of meal planning.

Wellness Benefits: Regular health screenings can be crucial to detecting serious illnesses early. The NCFlex Accident Plan, Critical Illness Plan and Cancer Plan make regular health screenings more accessible by including wellness benefits for those enrolled. The benefit is payable once per year, per person for eligible screenings. Some tests may overlap all three plans, meaning you could potentially have a wellness benefit from all three plans if enrolled. Learn more about each plan's wellness benefit by clicking one of the buttons below.

Financial Health Webinars: Each summer, NCFlex teams up with the State Retirement System, State Employees Credit Union and the State's 401(k) and 457 provider to present Sensible Savings, a free financial and retirement planning workshop. You may have missed this July's series, but NCFlex-eligible employees are also invited to join a free Retirewise workshop series offered by MetLife; the next workshops begin in September.

Miles for Wellness: Need motivation to make daily movement a priority? Miles for Wellness is for you. In this virtual, team-based walking initiative, you can team up with and compete against other state employees to see which team can log the most steps over the course of eight weeks. If walking isn't your thing, you can easily record other types of exercises using the conversion spreadsheet we provide. Registration for the next challenge begins Sept. 3, so start recruiting your team of 10. It's going to be a wild time.

Community Service Leave: Volunteering has numerous mental health benefits. Eligible full-time state employees are granted 24 hours of community service leave each year to support schools, communities, citizens and non-profit organizations. Before taking your community service leave, be sure to clear the time off with your supervisor and review the Community Service Leave Policy.

Career Advancement Resources for State Employees on the Spectrum

Did you know state employees with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can receive up to five hours of career coaching through their employer?

Through the NCCARES program, any state employee with ASD can submit a request for a coaching opportunity to help them apply for promotions or job changes within state government.

These services are provided by UNC TEACCH Autism Program and the Autism Society of North Carolina. NCCARES was designed to create an inclusive climate for workers with disabilities and promote a more diverse workplace across state agencies and universities.

Make the Most of Your Dependent Day Care FSA

The Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account (DDCFSA) is a great way to save on taxes when it comes to child care and adult day care expenses. Are you getting the most out of your account? Below, we break down a few common questions to help ensure your DDCFSA dollars work for you.

If your care provider doesn't accept the FSA convenience card, you can file a manual claim online, through the mobile app or by mail. Remember that your reimbursement is limited to your account balance, which is based on the amount deducted from your payroll for year and the amount you've already spent.

If you file a claim manually, you'll need to list the dates of service, your care provider's tax ID and the cost of care. If your care provider doesn't already provide you with this information, simply request that they complete and sign the claim form. Remember, a good rule of thumb while filing manually is to do so a week before the month ends for that month's expenses. It takes 3-5 business days for the claim to process and an additional 1-2 days for funds to hit your bank account.

If your care costs more than what's available in your account, file the entire amount. You'll only be reimbursed up to the amount available in your account, but the remainder may be reimbursable later if no other claims are filed. For example, if your monthly contribution is $416, by the end of the year you'll have contributed $4,992. If you file $1,000 claims in January through May only for a total of $5,000 in claims, then you'll be reimbursed $416 each of those months and you'll continue to receive reimbursements each payroll period as another $416 is deducted from your salary. By the end of the plan year, you'll have been reimbursed your full $4,992 contribution.

The most you can contribute to the account in a plan year is $5,000 per household based on IRS limitations.

If you experience a qualifying life event and want to make changes to your DDCFSA, you have 30 days from the date of the event. Be sure to upload supporting documentation of your change into your enrollment platform. If you don't have supporting documentation, complete the NCFlex DDCFSA QLE Form. And, if you're a university employee, reach out to your University Benefits Administrator to change your DDCFSA.

If you have any other questions about your DDCFSA, please reach out to us at ncflex@nc.gov and we'll help you get the most out of your account.
