Welcome to the 14th week of The Challenge!
Our 18-Week Challenge gives us an opportunity to read articles, listen to podcasts, and view videos dealing with the roots of racial injustice, the systemic racist policies in our institutions, and our own misconceptions of racism. The Challenge creates a dedicated time and space for us to reflect on our own personal experiences, biases, and assumptions. Each week you will be sent a new prompt to explore.
Week 14: November 27
Today is Black Friday, symbolically seen as the start of the critical holiday shopping season for retailers. This week’s challenge is to shop and purchase gifts and essentials from Black-owned businesses. We can read and discuss the importance of racial equity each week, but by purchasing products and services from Black-owned and operated businesses, we are doing something tangible and demonstrating that we are working to be true allies.
Here are a few resources to help you find that perfect gift and Black Shop Friday:
- An online directory of more than 500 Black-owned businesses in Chicago
-
Shop Black Business Hub, A FacebookGroup where you can hear, see, interact, and of course purchase from Black business owners.
-
