With a new Supreme Court and a Republican Senate,
Roe
v. Wade is under threat right now. Activist and writer Robin Marty believes we are no longer talking about some hypothetical future.
“When we say abortion will be illegal in half the states in the nation we are talking about just years down the road,” she explains. “We have to act now to secure what access remains and shore up the networks supporting those who need care.”

At this year’s event we are excited to present our
first ever NCJWAZ Impact Award to Serena Knierim, founder of AZ Clinic Defense Force.
Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will benefit NCJW’s efforts on behalf of protecting women’s rights to reproductive justice, the AZ Family Health Partnership, AZ Clinic Defense Force and AZ Abortion Fund.

What’s The Big Deal About
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) And Arizona?
It’s time for the United States Government to give women equal rights!.
What do you think? Here is the timeline associated with this amendment.
- 1923: Proposed by National Woman’s Political Party
- 1971-72: U.S. House and Senate passed ERA but need 38 states to ratify and add it to the U.S. Constitution.
- 1973: 30 States ratified the Amendment
- 1979: 35 States ratified the Amendment
- 2017 – 2018: 36th and 37th states ratify the Amendment
- 2019: Will Arizona be the 38th state to ratify the amendment???
The amendment is
SCR1006
in the Arizona Senate. It has not been assigned a number yet in the House. The amendment states:
"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."
At this time the amendment needs to be brought to a committee at the Legislature. If it passes out of committee and it goes to the floor of both the House and Senate, Arizona could be the 38
th
State to ratify the ERA Amendment. Please contact:

and
Speaker of the House, Rusty Bowers
Ask them to submit this bill to their respective committees for a hearing. It make take several weeks to accomplish this but please don’t give up! Call every day until this is accomplished. I will let you know the status as it moves around the legislature.

Birth control -- yes, even birth control is under attack.
Who would have thought that our daughters and granddaughters would still be fighting for their bodies and their lives in the year 2019?
Yet, the fight for women’s reproductive choices continues today in the halls of Congress and state legislatures.
We are proud that NCJW has long been a strong Jewish voice for health equity, reproductive freedom, and true moral autonomy for all. We refuse to stand idly by in the face of injustices that deny women the right or ability to make their own decisions about their bodies, health, families, and future.
Further, NCJW endorses and resolves to work for comprehensive, confidential, accessible family planning and reproductive health services, regardless of age or ability to pay.

Volunteer Opportunity at Sojourner Center
Sojourner Center is a domestic abuse center located in Phoenix offering a multitude of services to woman and their children who are in crisis due to abuse.
NCJW members learned about the need for these services at our November meeting at Temple Chai where panelists discussed women’s health issues and many attendees expressed an interest in volunteering opportunities. If you are interested, please sign up to volunteer in the Sojourner Donation Center on either
Sunday, February 10th and/or Sunday March 10th from 9 AM to noon
.
This is a fun and easy way to help.

Looking for a way to help with our educational system from your armchair?
Consider joining our Vello Team!
Vello is a 21
st
century
on-line tutoring program
that connects enthusiastic volunteers to kids in our local community. Through Vello we are joining countless United Way volunteers and partners working to support students across the country in kindergarten through 5
th
grade as they work toward reading milestones.
This is a chance to volunteer on your personal schedule. It takes only 30 minutes a week or even a month to help a child gain the skills he or she needs to succeed!
So far our NCJW volunteers have been very successful with the youngsters we have helped to read. In fact, we have been so appreciated that we have been asked if we can enlist enough volunteers for another classroom!

It was a dark and stormy night,
but that didn’t stop NCJW members and guests from filling the social hall at Temple Chai for our NCJW meeting on Jan. 15. We learned how we can make our voices heard at the Arizona Legislature to advance issues we care about like women’s health care and safety.

Clear your shelves or garage and give us your unwanted paperback books to send to our troops. I will collect them at general meetings or contact me to arrange a pick up. By December, 75 paperbacks were donated! Keep them coming!
PUEBLO NORTE VOLUNTEERS
Members are always needed as facilitators for various games in the Assisted Living section -- days and times can be determined with Pam, the events director. Can you donate one half-hour a month? Visit with the residents in Healthcare, any day or time. Contact Bunny Berkowitz for details, questions and hopefully with the date(s) you are available.

will responsibly recycle or refurbish all mobiles, from old and broken to the latest smart phones, to create communication networks for health workers serving millions in fifteen countries. Hope Phones receives the value of each recycled phone to purchase new mobile technology for the field. Takes a little longer to do, but you’ve been really generous to this program.
