STATE PUBLIC ADVOCATE
ARE YOU READY TO VOTE ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 6, 2018?
Before you can vote on November 6
th
you need to be registered to vote in Arizona by October 9
th
. If you have moved or have changed your name, please make sure you are able to vote. Maricopa County sends out a card before the primary elections to confirm that the information on the voter rolls is correct. If you received the card and checked that your information is correct you don't have to do anything.
Voting is a privilege. More than that, voting is a right in America. Would you give up any of your rights? Why give up this one? Most of our members do vote, but I’m sure you know some people who don’t. Remind them that every vote counts. In the last election less than 50% of eligible voters didn’t go to the polls. The results were really close because our country is deeply divided politically. Do the numbers and you’ll see that only about 25% of the American people actually voted for the government we have today! If you have any questions, please contact me at
consalvo@cox.net
and I will help you navigate through the system.

PROGRAM VICE PRESIDENT
This year, our programs focus on aspects of
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH and JUSTICE
because our lives depend on it!
Every meeting will provide opportunities for our members to use our Jewish values to bring about positive change.
Civia Tamarkin, our Action Vice President and writer/director of the film
Birthright:A War Story,
kicked off our September meeting by warning us that we are living in a time that poses the greatest threat to women’s privacy, health and bodily autonomy in more than half a century. Our members and supporters volunteered to help
get out the vote --
our first line of defense -- to overturn the legislative restraints in Arizona and across the country.
Our
October 16th
meeting at
The New Shul
at
7:00 PM
will feature a panel discussion entitled:
Who is Fighting for Reproductive Justice? What they are Doing and Why!
You won’t want to miss hearing from these courageous leaders who are fighting for our reproductive health care rights and freedom - service providers, reproductive justice advocates, clergy and state activists.
Our
November 27th
meeting at
Temple Chai
will discuss all aspects of
Violence against Women
and how it affects our health and autonomy. Find out just how pervasive this issue is and what we can do about it, through the lens of the medical community, victims, advocacy and shelter professionals.
“When I marched in Selma”, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote, “my feet were praying.” It is our turn now to follow in his footsteps.

NCJW AZ PRESIDENT
OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Domestic Violence is one of the many causes NCJW continues to champion. The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. For the past 125 years we have been dedicated to the practice of
Tikkun Olum
(Repairing the World) and
Lo Ta’Amod Al Dam Reichah
(Do Not Stand Idly By.)
Domestic violence affects every American. It harms our communities, weakens the foundation of our Nation, and hurts those we love most. It is an affront to our basic decency and humanity, and it must stop. In October we acknowledge the progress made in reducing these shameful crimes, embrace the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse, and recognize that more work remains to be done until every individual is able to live free from fear.
Because of domestic violence women and children are deprived of a loving home, legal protections, or financial independence. They live in fear for their safety. Here are some frightening statistics:
- Nearly two out of three Americans 15 years of age or older knows a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.
- Domestic violence homicides claim the lives of three women every day.
- One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
- Young people between the ages of sixteen and twenty four experience domestic violence at the highest rates.
There are many causes of domestic violence. One is low self-esteem, which we know starts when females are young; younger than you may think.
Hopefully you and all you hold dear are safe from domestic violence. However, if you know of or suspect any victims, please contact the
Domestic Violence Hotline
immediately at
1.800.799 SAFE (7233).
