NCJW July 2019 News and Events
|
|
It's July and summer seems to finally have arrived. Or at least the warm weather has arrived. I for one am hoping the rain stops long enough to celebrate the 4th of July. The fight for freedom, individual rights, and civil liberties for everyone is never ending. Take a moment this Independence Day to reflect on the freedoms you have and the freedoms you wish for all.
Membership Renewal
With July comes NCJW membership renewal season. Your annual membership runs from July 1 through June 30 so for most annual members, your membership just expired.
As an NCJW Chicago North Shore member, you will impact your community and the world at large by becoming part of a growing grassroots network of courageous and compassionate individuals who improve the lives of women, children, and families every day.
Your support makes it possible for NCJW to create meaningful social change for women, children, and families locally, nationally and internationally. Together with you, NCJW will empower women to educate their communities, mobilize the grassroots, and advocate for fundamental rights and freedoms.
Hannah G Solomon Award
This year, on September 23, NCJW CNS is so pleased to honor Past-President and extraordinary advocate Donna Gutman with NCJW's highest honor, The Hannah G Solomon award which is presented to an individual who has changed the lives of others through his or her leadership efforts and service. Hannah Solomon Sponsorship Opportunities
|
We are thrilled to announce that Donna Gutman will receive the Hannah G. Solomon Award on Monday, September 23, 2019. Donna encapsulates all of NCJW values and ideals. She is a force for social change, empowering women and girls and she leads by example.
We are also excited that Heather Booth, pioneer of the women’s reproductive justice movement, will keynote the event and honor Donna. Heather is founder of the Jane Collective, an underground service in Chicago connecting women to safe abortion before Roe v. Wade. Major donors and sponsors are invited to attend a special screening of the new documentary, “Heather Booth: Changing the World” at a reception with Heather before the dinner.
This is a critical time for the issues pertinent today—reproductive health, federal courts, voter engagement, gun violence prevention, sexual violence, voting rights, immigration & refugees, gender equality. To continue the work of NCJW and to raise the voices of women like yourself who are against oppressive policies, we hope you will consider becoming a Hannah G Solomon Awards Major Donor. Major Donors and Event Sponsors are invited to an exclusive pre-dinner film screening and private reception with Donna Gutman and Heather Booth.

Lead! Organizing skills for grassroots advocates: Abortion and Faith Messaging
How do we use our faith values to further our activism? How do we break through false narratives and rhetoric surrounding abortion? When should we use faith messaging in our reproductive health, rights, and justice advocacy? Join NCJW and Catholics for Choice for the first part of a special summer series of Lead! webinars focusing on the intersection of Abortion& other critical issues. Learn about Abortion& Faith Messaging on
Wednesday, July 17 at 1:30pm ET (10:30am PT).
Some of the topics we’ll be touching on are:
- Why we use faith to provide a counternarrative to anti-abortion zealots;
- The importance of lifting up the voices of people faith; and
- How to use faith talking points effectively.
Take Action to End Criminalization, Detention, & Deportations
Saturday, July 13th, 11:00 to 1:00
Daley Center Plaza, 50 W. Washington Street
On a daily basis, immigrant communities in Illinois live with the fear that imminent raids and escalated activity by ICE, as stated by Trump, will rip families apart. We see more information each day regarding deplorable situations at the border - where government officials deny there is a humanitarian crisis, where children are treated as less than human, and where more children have died in immigration custody in 2019 than in the past 10 years.
Join immigrant rights, social justice, and grassroots organizations in protest against the administration’s destructive policies and actions, and take a stand to welcome immigrant communities. Add your voice to those in the movement to end criminalization, detention and deportation of immigrant families in the United States.

Protect our families, neighbors, and communities over the coming weeks and beyond.
Immigration enforcement raids separate families. President Trump’s tweets about mass immigration enforcement raids targeting families – even if they are in fact temporarily delayed – are terrifying families across the country. Parents are afraid to leave home, children are afraid to attend school or camp, and families are choosing not to seek medical care, access the justice system, or simply play outdoors. Tearing families apart does not align with our Jewish values – not even close.

NCJW Board Installation and Celebration
|
On Tuesday, June 11, we filled the room to capacity at Wildfire Restaurant in Glenview with NCJW advocates, supporters and friends as we thanked our outgoing board members and installed our new Board of Directors.
Donna Gutman honored thanked out-going president Tina Cantrell for her service - two years as co-president and a third as president of our section. Tina's leadership was an inspiration and we are ever thankful that Tina continually steps up to fill roles such as becoming our next treasurer.
New Board Member Sherry Petlin presented Beverly Copeland with the Advocate of the Year Award. Bev has been concerned about the issue of gun-violence for over 30 years. A passionate advocate, Bev keeps our section informed about pending and proposed legislation as well as opportunities to advocate. We are excited to have Bev join our section Board.
Past-President Cindy Wolfson presented the Volunteers of the Year award to Nora Zuckerman and Pam Zlotnik. For nearly a decade, Pam and Nora have co-chaired our Luggage for Freedom project. Their passion for community service and social justice is fueled by their past advocacy with victims of domestic violence. We are so thankful for their continued service. Make sure to put Sunday, October 27, 2019 on your calendar for the annual Luggage for Freedom Pack and Delivery Day.
We were entertained by the forever young Elaine Soloway who spoke to us about her life, her family and how she stays fabulous at any age!
Our new Board president Debbie Vietinghoff closed our the program. Debbie hopes to take our section to new heights as we broaden our reach and activate more section members, supporters and advocates.
