NCJW March 2020 News and Events
|
|
Dare we hope that spring is here? To quote Dar Williams, one of my personal singer/songwriters:
"February was so long that it lasted into March And found us walking a path alone together
You stopped & pointed & you said that's a crocus
And I said what's a crocus?
And you said it's a flower
I tried to remember but I said what's a flower?"
Trust me, it's a great
song!
Anyway, Spring marks the third quarter of our programming season but we are still going strong! Check out our upcoming events listed below and add them to your calendar. Wish you could go but want an NCJW friend to go with you, or need a ride to or from an event? Just email us at

On Wednesday, March 4, the Supreme Court will hear a case that could gut Roe v. Wade. Slowly and systematically, states around the country have been chipping away at our abortion rights by making abortions harder and harder to access. Now, a decidedly anti-abortion Supreme Court is being asked to weigh in on June Medical Services v. Russo, a case out of Louisiana that could define abortion access for years to come — and abortion isn’t a right if you can’t access it.
So, we will be there.
Because sometimes you just have to show up and make noise. Wherever you are on Wednesday, here are some ways you can get involved:
Press Conference and Rally in Chicago: Please join the Abortion Rights Coalition and a coalition of organizations for a
Press Conference and Rally at noon March 4th, the day the Supreme Court hears oral arguments for
June Medical Services v. Russo (formerly June Medical Services v. Gee). At issue is the Louisiana law that would force abortion doctors to receive admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, which is difficult and unnecessary. Also, it is against precedent as a nearly identical law in Texas was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2016 with Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt. The Louisiana law would effectively shut two or possibly all three of the remaining clinics in the state.
Rally in DC: Join Sheila Katz on the steps of the Supreme Court for the #MyRightMyDecision rally. We'll be handing out signs and buttons in front of the Dirksen Senate Office Building (corner of First Street NE and Constitution Ave. NE) beginning at 7:30 am before heading to the rally together. You can find more information on our
Facebook page and RSVP for the rally
here.
Rally in New Orleans: Join
NCJW Greater New Orleans section at the statehouse, where Section President Susan Hess will be speaking!
Other Ways to Take Action:
- Join the #MyRightMyDecision conversation on social media! Show your support for abortion rights and access and encourage your followers to do the same by using #MyRightMyDecision and the graphics below on social media. Make sure to follow along on NCJW national’s Twitter and Facebook and share our thread about Judaism and Abortion.
- Sample social media.
- Twitter:
- Abortion isn’t a right if you cannot access it. On March 4, #SCOTUS hears a case that could gut Roe by allowing states to shut down access to abortion. It’s simple: our constitutional rights are being challenged and we must speak out. #AbortionisKosher #MyRightMyDecision. Download graphics here
- Facebook:
- On March 4, #SCOTUS hears a case that impacts abortion access nationwide. Simply put: Roe v. Wade is at stake because abortion isn’t a right if you cannot access it. Our Jewish values compel us to support abortion as basic health care. #AbortionisKosher #MyRightMyDecision. Download graphics here
- Call your senators about 2 bills that will help to advance proactive legislation to safeguard our constitutional right to abortion nationwide.
- EACH Woman Act (HR 1692/S 758) provides insurance coverage for abortion care in federal health programs.
- The Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA, HR 2975/S 1645) would eliminate medically unnecessary abortion restrictions.
