the Community Survey

The Long Beach City Council has unanimously voted to embark on a process to establish a Commission for Women and Girls. This represents nearly 50 years of advocacy and recently the City Council has allocated funding to take the next steps on creating a Commission.

This is an invitation to shape the mission of the Long Beach Commission for Women and Girls (LBCWG). The Long Beach Office of Equity wants to understand what women and girls need, want, and deserve. Their work is to collate and organize responses and present them to the Long Beach City Council to ensure that the Commission’s priorities align with the community’s vision.

They have committed to working intersectionally and inclusively to promote equality and justice for all women and girls focusing on economic and educational equity, access to health care, including reproductive choice, violence against women, safety and other key issues affecting women and girls.

Please give it as much thought and time as your busy life allows. They know they can’t do this important work without community input.

NCJW ACTION ALERT

The issue: Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines are commonplace in mass shootings and make shootings more deadly.

The good news: During the ten years we had an assault weapons ban in the US, the number of gun massacres fell by 37 percent. The Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, passed by the House of Representatives on July 29, would regulate these dangerous weapons, prevent mass shooting injuries, and save lives.

Our task: Tell the Senate to pass the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021 to reduce the devastation of daily gun violence in America.

TAKE ACTION NOW

The issue: There is a major barrier to abortion care in the annual appropriations (budgeting) bills. The Hyde Amendment is the language that denies abortion coverage to anyone enrolled in federal health programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The good news: The Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act would end these dangerous and discriminatory coverage bans.

Our task: Urge your lawmakers to support the EACH Act.

TAKE ACTION NOW

The issue: Despite the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, too many pregnant workers are fired, forced to quit, or take unpaid leave, simply for requesting a reasonable accommodation so they can keep working.

The good news: The bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (S 1486) would help end this form of discrimination by requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for a limitation arising out of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions unless doing so would pose an undue hardship on the employer.

Our task: In May 2021, the bill passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming bipartisan support. We need to convince the Senate to do the same!
