NCLEX SECRETS

Hi there!

Your NCLEX exam date is fast approaching. And you have been preparing double-time for your big day. Here are 6 Proven and Effective Tips that can guide you in your preparation. Read on!

1. Time is your greatest friend (or enemy)

- Take the exam sooner rather than later.

- Determine the number of days before the exam and DO A SELF- ASSESSMENT to determine the length of time in your daily study session.

- Can CONCENTRATE BEST on a 2-hour study period with 10 minutes break every 45 minutes.

- DAILY STUDYING is imperative.

2. Guessing is Not Guesswork

- Parts of an NCLEX Question:

a. Case or Scenario
b. The Stem
c. The Correct Options
d. The THREE Distractions

- Don’t read into questions- your first answer is often the best one. You should only change your answer with good reason!

- Ace those NCLEX Questions:

a. Look for QUALIFYING TERMS such as usually, sometimes, commonly, average, often. Sometimes all four options seem plausible. In this case, there may be a qualifying term in the stem that will exclude all but one choice.

b. Look for KEY WORDS that substantiate your choice. Key words reflect details of the questions and can also include most appropriate response, immediate nursing action and least likely.

c. Remember the “ODD MAN OUT” theory. If three are similar and one is different, the different one may be the option.

d. Remember the “UMBRELLA EFFECT”. Sometimes three of the options are correct, but each option only addresses part of the stem. In this case, the fourth option will be the global answer that encompasses the three other.

e. Watch out for ABSOLUTES like always, never, all, none. There are only few things in life that are always right or always wrong.

f. If two options are opposite, it is likely that one is the answer.

g. If two options are similar, one may be more right in answering the stem or both may be distractors.

h. If an option contains a correct and incorrect fact, it cannot be the answer.

3. Practice Smarter, Not Harder

- Take as many practice tests using the New NCLEX- RN Test Plan, Effective April 2010

Client Needs Percentage of Items from Each Category ⁄Subcategory
  Safe and Effective Care Environment
Management of Care 16-22%
Safety and Infection Control 8-14%
Heath Promotion and Maintenance 6-12%
Psychosocial Integrity 6-12%
Physiological Integrity
Basic Care and Comfort 6-12%
Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies 13-19%
Reduction of Risk Potential 10-16%
Physiological Adaptation 11-17%

- Consider a structured study program.

- Form SMALL STUDY GROUPS for support and review materials.

4. Prepare, Don’t Procrastinate

- Establish a routine. Choose the same time everyday when you are less likely interrupted.

- Create a study that is exclusively yours. You will need a desk, a chair, good lighting and preferably a door which you can close.

- Be sure family and friends recognize the importance of your quiet study time.

- Avoid distractions such as phone, tv and radio.

- Make use of in-between study time. Flashcards or lists may be helpful while waiting in line, during commute or eating lunch.

5. Overcome Test Anxiety.

- POSITIVE SELF- TALK is one of the most effective confidence booster theories. Negative thoughts will only sabotage you.

- DEEP BREATHING involves breathing from the diaphragm. Inhale through the nose, allowing the chest to fill. Then exhale slowly through the mouth.

- VISUALIZATION involves breathing as you close your eyes and imagine yourself to be in your favorite place or your favorite person or you can bring back a favorite memory.

- MUSCLE RELAXATION involves deep breathing and progressive concentrated relaxation of various muscle groups.

6. Test Yourself

- Arrive early, well rested and alert.

- Bring ATT and 2 forms of ID with signature and photo.

- Carefully read and follow all directions.

- Stay relaxed and focused. We tend to make more mistakes when we are nervous.

- Boost your confidence level by reminding yourself of how much you know and have learned already.

Now let us take this guarantee one step further. Ace the NCLEX!
