A Farewell from President Sean Pauzauskie, MD

Dear NCMS Community,

As the New Year gets underway, a tremendous amount of gratitude is owed to our members for making 2024 such a thriving year for the medical society. From our educational events and successful legislative advocacy efforts to our social programming and collaborations with local and national healthcare stakeholders, the Society maintained our long-lasting missions, while venturing into new and uncharted territory.

A special thank you is owed to our members who participated in these efforts. From the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair at CSU to our collaboration with UC Health’s networking events, from our annual meeting on the theme of artificial intelligence with Ascertain CEO, Dr. Mark Michalski, to our physician’s book club who read Kazuo Ishiguro’s AI parable Klara and the Sun, from our Legislative Night with locally elected Representatives and candidates, to those who supported the front lines of physician and patient-friendly legislators through the Colorado Medical Political Action Committee (COMPAC), the latter which notably led to the successful avoidance of ballot measures to create a medical liability cliff and the elimination of peer review — as well as Colorado’s passage of a first-in-the-world law to protect patients’ neural data, an idea spreading nationwide and which was first approved by NCMS — member participation remained the lifeblood of what we do, and the only reason for our activities and accomplishments.

There are, of course, too many to name, the work is never finished, and the need for community and connection amongst our physicians more important than ever. So we look to 2025 with the commitment to continue the things we do well, while leaving room for the innovation that drives the profession forwards. Next month we welcome incoming-President, Dr. Narina Grove, a pathologist from Summit Pathology, whose dynamic leadership will include efforts to combat human trafficking, as well as bolster partnerships for youth mental health. We should support these efforts however we can, while we urge members to bring their own ideas to the table — as we are, as always, ready and open for collaboration.

On a personal level, it has remained the honor and privilege of my career thus far to serve as your President these past two years. The experience both met and far exceeded expectations for what we could accomplish. Despite challenges old and new, I have seen that the profession remains in good hands, due to the tireless effort of physicians like yourself, your will to make the lives of your patients better, as well as the culture of health that we build in Northern Colorado together. These past two years taught me that there isn’t a single challenge we face that can’t be addressed with the unified voice of physicians, a necessary and indispensable rallying force which matters now more than ever, for our patients and colleagues. And so, a sincere, heartfelt thank you for this honor, which I look to carry forward in the future, always on your team — as well as an encouragement to keep this unified voice speaking up!

Wishing you, your family, and your practice a thriving 2025.

All the best,

Sean Pauzauskie, MD

Membership Renewal Season!

As you know, the practice of medicine is constantly evolving, and the challenges we face—both professionally and personally—are ever-changing. NCMS offers a critical platform for advocacy, education, and community. We strive to provide our members with opportunities to influence key policy decisions, address the issues that impact our profession, and foster a community that supports and uplifts one another.

As we continue to face larger challenges as a non-profit organization, we also need support from the community. Please share our information with your colleagues and encourage physicians to join the CMS and NCMS community. We encourage potential members to attend events and get involved so they can experience the value we offer.

To renew your membership, please go to the Colorado Medical Society website: https://www.cms.org/renew/

Upcoming Initiatives

Dear NCMS Members!

We're excited to be kicking off 2025. There are a lot of projects we're initiating in the new year. Last year our annual events including the Summer Social at the Gardens on Spring Creek and our Medical Student Welcome Event at O'Dell Brewing were very well attended with 70+ guests. I'd also like to thank NCMS President Dr. Sean Pauzauskie for his continued work with the Neurorights Foundation as he has gained national attention in the New York Times and CBS for the HB24-1058 bill regarding protecting biological data for consumers that Governor Polis signed in April which was the first legislation of its kind in the United States. He has traveled nationally to implement similar laws in states including Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, and California. We in turn received an award for the second year in a row from the American Association of Medical Society Executives Profiles in Excellence Award for Advocacy. That being said, there's still a lot of work to be done.

We held our first NCMS Board of Directors meeting this week and here are some of initiatives we'll be focused on:

  1. Meeting with legislators at the AMA National Advocacy Conference February 10th to discuss federal policy regarding Medicare reimbursements and Medicaid.
  2. At the state level, the NCMS Advocacy Committee is continuing their grassroots work with legislators. This is a continuation of the relationships we built at Legislative Night last September.
  3. Dr. Pauzauskie will soon announce our next Physicians’ Book Club meeting.
  4. We're preparing for our Annual Summer Social at the Gardens on Spring Creek on Saturday, August 23rd. This is a family fun event that is well attended each year.
  5. We'll continue our work with medical students including hosting an orientation week happy hour, assisting with CSU advocacy efforts regarding healthcare, and supporting the new UNC Osteopathic School.

This is just a sneak peek! We reviewed our strategic plan and have several new initiatives we'll be implementing including real time news from the StethoScope Podcast, educational events and forums, STEM projects to encourage careers in healthcare, and work with local organizations like the Northern Colorado Health Sector Partnership. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn for announcements. We redesigned our website so watch for updates on our events page as things progress. If you'd like to be more involved with our organization, please don't hesitate to contact me at crystal@nocomedsoc.org.

I hope you'll attend our Annual Meeting on February 21st in which we'll be reviewing our initiatives and kicking up our heels to big band music provided by the Don Elwood Band. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Crystal Goodman
