Dear NCMS Community,
As the New Year gets underway, a tremendous amount of gratitude is owed to our members for making 2024 such a thriving year for the medical society. From our educational events and successful legislative advocacy efforts to our social programming and collaborations with local and national healthcare stakeholders, the Society maintained our long-lasting missions, while venturing into new and uncharted territory.
A special thank you is owed to our members who participated in these efforts. From the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair at CSU to our collaboration with UC Health’s networking events, from our annual meeting on the theme of artificial intelligence with Ascertain CEO, Dr. Mark Michalski, to our physician’s book club who read Kazuo Ishiguro’s AI parable Klara and the Sun, from our Legislative Night with locally elected Representatives and candidates, to those who supported the front lines of physician and patient-friendly legislators through the Colorado Medical Political Action Committee (COMPAC), the latter which notably led to the successful avoidance of ballot measures to create a medical liability cliff and the elimination of peer review — as well as Colorado’s passage of a first-in-the-world law to protect patients’ neural data, an idea spreading nationwide and which was first approved by NCMS — member participation remained the lifeblood of what we do, and the only reason for our activities and accomplishments.
There are, of course, too many to name, the work is never finished, and the need for community and connection amongst our physicians more important than ever. So we look to 2025 with the commitment to continue the things we do well, while leaving room for the innovation that drives the profession forwards. Next month we welcome incoming-President, Dr. Narina Grove, a pathologist from Summit Pathology, whose dynamic leadership will include efforts to combat human trafficking, as well as bolster partnerships for youth mental health. We should support these efforts however we can, while we urge members to bring their own ideas to the table — as we are, as always, ready and open for collaboration.
On a personal level, it has remained the honor and privilege of my career thus far to serve as your President these past two years. The experience both met and far exceeded expectations for what we could accomplish. Despite challenges old and new, I have seen that the profession remains in good hands, due to the tireless effort of physicians like yourself, your will to make the lives of your patients better, as well as the culture of health that we build in Northern Colorado together. These past two years taught me that there isn’t a single challenge we face that can’t be addressed with the unified voice of physicians, a necessary and indispensable rallying force which matters now more than ever, for our patients and colleagues. And so, a sincere, heartfelt thank you for this honor, which I look to carry forward in the future, always on your team — as well as an encouragement to keep this unified voice speaking up!
Wishing you, your family, and your practice a thriving 2025.
All the best,
Sean Pauzauskie, MD
