NCMS President's Address - Knowledge Beyond the Exam Room

One of the great privileges of being a physician is the opportunity to care for people one patient at a time. But recently, I was reminded that our responsibility—and our opportunity—can extend well beyond the walls of our clinics and hospitals.

I had the honor of participating in a community Lunch and Learn in partnership with Partnership for Age-Friendly Communities (PAFC) Larimer. What struck me most was how interested people were in understanding medical issues that directly affect their everyday lives: their ability to work, exercise, remain independent, and simply function without pain or limitation.

As physicians, we spend years—often decades—acquiring knowledge. We read journals, attend conferences, discuss difficult cases with colleagues, and continually refine our understanding of medicine. Much of that knowledge, however, remains within the medical community. I believe we should challenge ourselves to change that.

Our communities have an enormous appetite for credible, understandable health information. At a time when people are surrounded by medical information from social media, advertising, and countless online sources, physicians have an opportunity to be trusted educators—not simply when someone becomes a patient, but before they ever enter our offices. Advocacy Updates

NCMS hosted Legislative Night in which we held a town hall meeting with representatives from both Weld and Larimer counties focusing on healthcare issues facing physicians and patients. Included in the discussion Senator Cathy Kipp, Representative Andrew Boesenecker, Representative Scott Slaugh, and Representative Ryan Gonzalez. We also had representation from the Colorado Medical Society including their lobbyists Dan Jablan and Jerry Johnson. Our goal is to build relationships with legislators so we can successfully make change that benefits both physicians and patients. The Colorado 2027 legislative session starts January 11th.

Colorado Medical Society Virtual Town Hall

with Attorney General Phil Weiser

Sunday, October 11th 6:30 - 7:15pm

Registration is required

Join the Colorado Medical Society for an exclusive members-only virtual town hall with Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is seeking the office of Governor.

This event will provide an opportunity to hear directly from AG Weiser about his vision for health care and discuss the issues shaping the practice of medicine in Colorado. The discussion will be guided by questions from CMS members and will focus on the broad challenges and opportunities facing physicians, patients, and the state's health care system. Your voice matters. Submit questions in advance when you register. CMS extended a similar invitation to the Victor Marx campaign and have not heard back. CMS is a non-partisan organization focused on building relationships with statewide representatives on both sides of the aisle. If you'd like to review our COMPAC endorsements, click here.
