President’s Letter: 2023 Annual Meeting Nominations

Welcome to fall, and soon to be winter. We've had a busy summer at the Northern Colorado Medical Society and are looking forward to our annual meeting in February. There are a few items that we will be dealing with during the meeting, and I wanted to get any possible feedback.

First, is our annual scholarship. This was started a number of years ago, and we currently award two $5,000 scholarships - one each to a student in Larimer and Weld County. The criteria are that the student have attended high school in their respective county and be currently in medical school. We have had some spectacular candidates in the past and are soliciting applications now and I can say without reservation that had I been in competition with these candidates I would have not gotten into medical school. If you know of any worthy applicants, please contact Crystal.

Secondly, we will have our presentation of the physician of the year and are also soliciting applicants. We are looking for physicians who have gone above and beyond the average practice and are especially interested in physicians who have been in integral in dedication to the community, volunteer service, academic pursuits, or other extracurricular activities that reflect well on the medical profession. Read the full president's letter here.

Executive Director: STEM Project Update

As part of our strategic plan, we’re focused on providing educational opportunities for youth. Over the summer we worked with a high school intern at Fort Collins Family Medicine as part of Larimer County’s ongoing effort to encourage careers in healthcare. I'd like to share the video with you so you can see how impactful the experience was for both the student and the physicians who mentored her.

If you’re interested in offering an apprenticeship or internship at your practice with the Poudre School District, please contact Poudre School District Work-Based Learning Outreach Coordinator/ASCENT Coordinator Kelly Kappel at kkappel@psdschools.org.  Read more here!

2022 NCMS Legislative Night

We hosted our annual Legislative Night at The Garden Room in Loveland on October 6th. The event was hosted by NCMS President Dr. Ted Norman. There were presentations by CMS lobbyists Dan Jablan and Jerry Johnson, Dr. Donna Sullivan discussed the Council on Legislation. NCMS Physician of the Year Dr. Christie Reimer was our moderator for the physician panel. We discussed 4 key topics including prior authorization, scope of practice, stabilizing the liability insurance climate, and behavioral health resources in our region. Executive Director of the Behavioral Health Services at the Longview Campus Brian Ferrans presented on facility updates. The next Colorado legislative session will begin January 9th, 2023.

I want to thank the legislators who attended the event along with our wonderful sponsors who donated raffle prizes and hosted exhibit tables.
