2019 PCT School: Our Largest PCT School Ever!

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2019 Pest Control Technicians' School in January and to all of the sponsors and exhibitors who helped make the event a great success!

We are excited to announce that this year's school was our biggest ever! With 1,008 attendees, it was our most well-attended event to date and is second only to PestWorld in numbers of attendance for pest management conferences.

In addition, we had several new additions to our school.
  • ACE Prep Course and Exam: Nine people participated in the ACE Prep Course and Exam, and seven people passed the exam! For more information, see below.
  • NCSU Hands-On Spray School and Live Learning Course: We had a packed house for this new course! 41 people participated in this course at the NCSU Training Facility in Raleigh.
  • NWCOA Bat Standards Course: Nearly 30 people joined us for the NWCOA Bat Standards Course which explained the survival and future of bats in North America.
A big thank you to John Adkins and Mitch Taylor who served as event Chairs and made sure the event went smoothly for everyone.

7 Participants Pass the ACE Certification Exam at 2019 PCT School

The NC Chapter of Professional Women in Pest Management kicked off its 1st Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) Prep Class and Exam at the NCPMA Pest Control Technician's School on January 28, 2019.  The North Carolina program offers a unique benefit compared to similar programs throughout the nation.  All participants that register for the prep course are assigned a mentor that works with them for 6 months prior to attending the course and taking the exam. That extra benefit resulted in 7 out of 9 participants passing the exam.  That was a 78% passing ratio compared to the industry average of 58%.

The Entomological Society of America, long the industry leader in certification through its Board Certified Entomologist ( BCE ) program, also offers a certification option geared specifically toward the pest management industry.  People become ACEs  for a variety of reasons, but one thing is clear - the ACE program has become the benchmark for professionalism in the pest management industry and is endorsed by the National Pest Management Association.

For more information about becoming an Associated Certified Entomologist and/or signing up for the next ACE prep course and exam contact Marie Horner at  mhorner@arrowexterminators.com.

McDuffie and Roberts Named NCPMA Life Members
Walter McDuffie and Jack Roberts Receive Prestigious Recognition

Dana McDuffie Presents Life Member Award to her father Walter McDuffie

NCPMA presented Walter McDuffie and Jack Roberts with Life Members Awards at the 2018 PCT School in January.

NCPMA offers life member status based on an individual's active membership for 20 years or more and outstanding service to the pest management profession.

NCPMA has granted Life Member status to six individuals in the association's history.

Walter McDuffie's career and membership in NCPMA span more than 50 years. He joined NCPMA shortly after receiving his bachelor's degree in Entomology from North Carolina State University and founding McDuffie Pest Control in Elizabethtown. McDuffie served multiple terms on the NCPMA Board of Directors and served as the association president in 1982.

Jack Roberts receives his Life Member Award from his son and daughter. Bruce Roberts (left) is the current NCPMA President.
Jack Roberts' career and NCPMA membership also spans more than 50 years. He graduated from North Carolina State University and, shortly thereafter, founded A-1 Pest Control in Lenoir in 1965. Roberts served on several NCPMA committees and served multiple terms on the NCPMA Board of Directors before serving as president from 1973-1974. During his two terms as president, Roberts was instrumental in helping NCPMA become an affiliated chapter of the National Pest Management Association.

NCPMA Awards Scholarships for 2018
Nine students receive scholarships across the state
NCPMA Board Member Marie Horner Presents Scholarship to NCSU Graduate Student Samantha McPherson.

The Education Foundation of the North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) recently awarded scholarships to nine students pursuing post-high school education programs.

The Foundation awarded a scholarship to Samantha McPherson to assist in the continuation of her studies at North Carolina State University (NCSU). McPherson is a graduate student studying Entomology.

The NCPMA Education Foundation awards $1,500 annually to students attending North Carolina State University. The scholarship was presented at the NCPMA Pest Control Technician's School in Durham in January 2019.

McPherson grew up in Julian, NC, and completed her bachelor's degree in biology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She currently studies cockroaches under Dr. Jules Silverman and Dr. Coby Schal at NCSU where her research is largely focused on cockroach nutrition, with emphasis on how cockroaches make diet choices and how diet affects reproductive success.

In addition, the NCPMA Education Foundation also awarded eight Past President's Scholarships to students pursuing post-high school degrees.
