Guest Column: Health Insurance Exchange
By: Ashley Morrison

The demands of healthcare are changing everyday, and as a business owner or manager, navigating these waters can be a challenge. Health insurance costs have skyrocketed over the past few years, making it one of the most expensive, yet highly sought after benefits by jobseekers. In June 2017, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) added a health insurance exchange to their ever-growing list of benefits. As a member of the North Carolina Pest Management Association and NPMA, you have access to it. These brand new benefits include a health insurance exchange available to almost all states in the United States. Previously, only larger companies often had access to group coverage. Through the exchange, small to medium sized companies can now offer PPO or HSA-compatible high-deductible plans to their employees.

In addition to the health insurance exchange, there are many other health insurance-related benefits now offered through NPMA, and the best news is that it's not all or nothing. You have the ability to design and choose the layers of benefits you want in place. A few of the other offerings include a heath reimbursement arrangement (HRA) for the employers who don't meet the underwriting guidelines, a health savings account (HSA) where participants can use tax-advantaged savings to pay for medical, dental, vision and other qualified expenses, and flexible spending accounts (FSA) for health care, dependent care, and other limited-purposes that allow employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified expenses. Spring Workshops Update

Thanks to everyone who attended our Spring Workshops across the state in February. Here's NCPMA Board Member Marie Horner preparing for one of this year's workshops.

We had a great turnout at each event and appreciated everyone who attended and made the events happen.

Meet the Board
Sarah Dodd
At-Large Director

Sarah Dodd of Carolina Pest Management, Inc. is currently serving her first term on the NCPMA Board of Directors as an At-Large Director. She is chairperson for the Technician of the Year committee and is a committee member for the N.C. Professional Women in Pest Management committee.

Pest management has always been a part of Sarah's life. She joined her family's business, Carolina Pest Management, Inc., after graduating from college in 2001 and enjoys seeing how pest management helps people every day.

NCPMA has been a key part of Sarah's pest management career, and she recommends that new technicians join the association to help expand their own career.

" I would tell a new PMP to join the association and to utilize all the resources it offers. The meetings and conferences are a great way to meet other members for more personal advice.  And, maybe try to get a mentor through the association," she said.

Sarah loves to travel and tries to visit a new country or island each year. As an animal lover, she also assists at animal rescues.

NCPMA Insider: Encouraging and Engaging Employees For Success
By: Marty Roberts

Every business depends on its employees for its success. As business owners we focus on how to choose and provide benefits that help us recruit top talent and keep them engaged throughout their careers.

The definition of engaged is  greatly interested or committed. And, it's my job as their boss to keep them committed to building upon their skills and becoming the best pest management professionals that they can be.

Through the years I've learned that my employees are like my extended family. And, the better you are to your employees and the better you treat them the better they treat your customers.

NCPMA has been an excellent resource for my employee development. It provides benefits that help us recruit and keep top talent and keep them engaged throughout their careers. And I recommend to all of my employees that they become involved with the association and with NPMA to help develop their skills and their careers.
