NCSO®/NHSA™ Practical Requirements – Safety Talks

As a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO®) or National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA), your role is essential in fostering a strong safety culture at the workplace. A key part of your responsibilities includes delivering effective safety talks to ensure workers remain informed, engaged, and proactive in maintaining a safe working environment.

Both NCSO®s and NHSAs are required to submit two documented safety talks as part of their new and renewal applications. Each safety talk must include clear documentation detailing who conducted the talk, the topics covered, signatures of attendees, and the date and location of the session. Proper documentation ensures compliance with certification requirements and demonstrates a commitment to workplace safety through effective communication and hazard awareness.

This resource is designed to support you in meeting your safety talk requirements by providing templates and resources.

IHSA Safety Talk Manual

The IHSA Safety Talks Manual is a comprehensive resource designed to help employers, supervisors, and safety professionals facilitate effective workplace safety discussions. It includes a wide range of pre-prepared safety talks covering key hazards, best practices, and regulatory requirements relevant to various industries, particularly construction, transportation, and utilities. Each talk provides clear instructions, discussion points, and practical tips to engage workers and reinforce a strong safety culture.

The manual serves as a valuable tool for daily or weekly safety meetings, helping organizations meet compliance requirements and reduce workplace incidents.

IHSA’s Communication Skills for Supervising Health and Safety course provides valuable training to improve public speaking, active listening, and worker engagement—critical elements for delivering impactful safety talks. By enhancing their communication abilities, NCSO®s and NHSAs can ensure that safety messages are understood, compliance is reinforced, and a stronger safety culture is fostered within their workplaces.
