NCSSM-Morganton Update
Greetings!
Vibrant colors have overtaken the trees and skies of western North Carolina and as you can see above, the NCSSM-Morganton site is no exception! Our campus landscape will soon evolve to include fences around existing structures as we initiate demolition and abatement activity prior to the end of the calendar year. As we begin preparations for early construction work, we are simultaneously kicking off a campaign to raise the remaining funds required to complete construction of our campus master plan. And as if that wasn't enough, we are continuing to host data science events across the state and preparing to launch two additional steering teams before year-end.

I am also very excited to release the fifth episode of our Road to Morganton short documentary series. Please set aside a few minutes to view this action-packed episode and you'll have the opportunity to hear from a diverse and distinguished group which includes the Speaker of the NC House of Representatives, regional executives from business and higher education, NCSSM leaders, and even Tinker Bell!

While this is the final regularly scheduled newsletter before the calendar turns to 2019, I will be back in touch to share two special messages during the holiday season. Until then, I hope you enjoy the colors across western North Carolina!

Best wishes,

Kevin Baxter

We were excited to share a program featuring remarks from Jeff Hicks '03, Jenny Dissen '95, Lou Bissette, Lee Ball, Megan Robinson, NCSSM Chancellor Todd Roberts, Brock Winslow '86, and Kevin Baxter.

Note: Video from the event will be posted later this week to our YouTube Channel .
NCSSM Snapshot:
Admissions Department
Each year, NCSSM Admissions staff travels across the state of North Carolina covering all 100 counties to promote NCSSM’s amazing residential, virtual, and summer programs. It’s also a very exciting time to introduce communities across the state to the campus under development in Morganton and slated to open in fall 2021.

In addition to traveling, Admissions staff is preparing the application process for the Class of 2021, which opened on October 15 and will close on January 15, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. For the first time in the institution's history, applicants will have the option of satisfying the standardized testing portion of the application with their ACT scores or SAT scores. Also, with the increase of STEM courses being offered in high schools, only three evaluations will be required: English teacher, STEM teacher and sophomore counselor.

Admissions is also delighted to host two Open House events each fall. This is an excellent opportunity for prospective students and parents to convene on our Durham campus to gain valuable information about the application process, learn about various departments (Humanities, Mathematics, Science, and Engineering/Computer Science), and engage in a campus tour.

Another important event that takes place on our campus each year is the Middle School Open House (Saturday, February 2, 2019), which exposes young scholars to our campus. This event is followed by the annual NCSSM Powwow which serves as an opportunity to promote diversity across our institution. American-Indian Tribes come from across our state to pay homage to their rich and vibrant heritage. If you have never attended a Powwow, please consider joining us for this festive event on the afternoon of February 2, 2019.

Finally, NCSSM Admissions is traveling to the Unifour Region and will be hosting an evening information session about the school for any interested students, parents, or educators. Please plan to join us at Leviton Auditorium inside of Moore Hall at Western Piedmont Community College on Tuesday, December 11 at 6:00 p.m. No advance registration required.
