NCSSM-Morganton Update
Greetings!

Day by day, the campus at NCSSM-Morganton is taking shape. The construction site is buzzing with activity, and work remains on schedule despite the wet weather this winter. While giving a tour yesterday, I was particularly excited to see the progress on the library space which boasts inspiring views of the historic cattle barn and the South Mountains. The video below gives you a sneak peak at what promises to be a popular spot on campus – not only to focus but also to clear one's mind.

The hiring process continues as we recruit and engage talent from throughout our region and around the country. I am excited to welcome Russell Moore to the NCSSM-Morganton team as our new Admissions Counselor. Russell comes to us with a wealth of experience and a love for our great state and he is excited to hit the ground running. We expect to announce several more new hires within the next month as we continue to build out our team.

On behalf of our growing team, thank you for your ongoing interest and support as we continue to welcome new donors and champions to our ranks on a near-daily basis. Our ecosystem of educators, partners, and investors continues to expand across our great state and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing engagement with NCSSM-Morganton!

With gratitude,

Kevin Baxter

WNC Hospital CEO receives state’s highest civilian honor
From the Morganton News Herald:
Thinking the Burke County Chamber of Commerce had won a prestigious award, Kathy Bailey, president and CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge, came to the Morganton Community House on Wednesday, Feb. 3, to meet Tonia Stephenson, president and CEO of the chamber, for a photo shoot.

Instead, Bailey found herself in the spotlight, as she was named to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor available in North Carolina. The award, created by Gov. Terry Sanford in spring 1963, honors residents for "exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the state.”

The surprise ceremony featured a video of the people who advocated for Bailey getting the award, including Morganton Mayor Ronnie Thompson; Mike Bridges, chair of the board of directors for CHS Blue Ridge; Steve Lawler, president and CEO of the North Carolina Healthcare Association; Chancellor Todd Roberts of the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics; and Stephenson. All five wrote letters to Gov. Roy Cooper supporting her nomination. Read more...
