ND Compass, by the NDSU Center for Social Research, is a centralized source for curated, reliable, and unbiased actionable demographic and socio-economic data, releases the 2025 Compass Points. ND Compass’ signature publication, Compass Points 2025, sponsored by Dakota Medical Foundation, continues to capture the current state of North Dakota, how North Dakota fares in relation to other states, and measures of progress over time in key topic areas. The goal of this publication is to provide data and analysis to better identify and build understanding about the issues and opportunities facing the state of North Dakota. This month's article highlights the notable trends and data points that appear in the newly released Compass Points.

Understanding dynamics in population change can help inform future planning and resource allocation across North Dakota’s counties. From July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, North Dakota's population grew by 7,521 people overall. While the state as a whole experienced population growth, change in population and the reasons for the change varied by county. Generally, counties with the largest population gains attribute that population increase to a positive natural change, and positive domestic migration. Counties with the largest population loss were more likely to have a negative natural change and also to experience domestic migration losses.
