Athletics Update
This Week in Sports...
The Notre Dame boys hockey team had a tough week, dropping a pair of close games against NFI (3-1) and Hamden (2-0).  On Saturday  afternoon, the Lancers battled with NFI and trailing, 2-0, got a beautiful deflection goal from senior captain Chris Becker. He got a stick on junior Justin LaSella's shot that ended up in the goal and closed the gap to one. Unfortunately that was all the offense the Lancers could generate as they fell, 3-1. Junior Kacy Adams was solid in net with 34 saves.  On Wednesday  night, Notre Dame faced off against the Green Dragons of Hamden and despite firing 26 shots on goal, could not light the lamp. Senior goalie Andrew Jones made 24 saves in the defeat. The Lancers have a busy week as they meet Xavier, Glastonbury and Farmington Valley.

Congrats to the following girls basketball players who were recognized by SWC this past week: Gabby Joseph - All Conference, Zuquila Mbachiantim, Erin Harris and Yamani McCullough - All Division

The girls' hockey team qualified for the SCC South league playoff with their 2-1 win over Guilford this week. Rebecca Paine was solid in net with 10 huge saves in the 3rd period to keep Guilford off the board. Leigha Howland and Ashley Graichen both scored to seal the victory. They had huge help from their line mates, Katelyn Pond, Lexie Burwell, Annie Scovill, and Sarah Casey. The defense was solid again lead by Laura Dennigan and reinforced by Bridget Magyar, Rose Linksamy and McKenzie Broderick. Maddie David was alert on the bench and prevented us from having too many players on the ice. It was a team effort from beginning to end. We look forward to our last regular season game against Fairfield at MIP  Saturday  night! The team will be in action as the 5th seed in the SCC playoffs on Monday v. Branford at 5:00 pm in East Haven.

Down to their final few games and the Lancers keep fighting to finish the season off with a high note. The boys' basketball team, still ranked #2 in the state, matched up twice with a third game coming for the second week in row, changing their current record to 18-0.  First on the list is the rematch that everyone was waiting for against the Kolbe Cathedral Cougars. The Lancers arose victorious yet again but unlike the first one, this game was a lot closer and packed with 10x the excitement. Leading the team in the 78-70 victory was senior Tyler Bourne who pulled off another double-double with 25 points and a key 10 assists. Other big players who also hit double-doubles were seniors Nore Davis and Woodley Monnexant. Davis had 12 points and 10 points while Monnexant came out with 17 points and a season high 15 rebounds.

Game 2 this week was played against the Newtown Hawks and the Lancers came out with another win. In the 91-58 win, 4 separate players wound up scoring double digits and one of them came out with another double-double. Senior Tyler Bourne was that person, who scored 21 points and made a whopping 15 assists. Other players in double figures were seniors Nore Davis and Damion Medwinter who scored 18 and 11, and also junior Josh Reaves who scored 20 points. The Lancers have o nly two games remaining during the regular season and both will be played at home.

The Lancer indoor track team wrapped up a successful winter campaign with a solid performance at the Class S championship last  Saturday . Both 4 x 200 teams performed well, with the boys lowering their season best to 1:44.21. Captains Jill Howe, Lindsay Salvati and Julian Barrantes represented ND in the 55 with Howe and Salvati finishing top 25 overall.

The hockey team will be sponsoring an ND Friends & Family Skate after their home game  on Saturday, February 24  from  5:30-6:30 pm.   The boys hockey team plays at  3:15 pm  vs Northwest Catholic.  The open skate will be after the game.  All ND Fairfield Alumni, Family and Friends are invited to come. Prior to this game, longtime ND coach Marty Roos and team statistician George Burr will be honored.
