LANCERS IN ACTION

Academic Spotlight

This week's Academic Spotlight is on Nadia Cal, who was nominated by her science teacher, Mrs. Almeida. "Nadia has been nominated for her dedication to her independent research project. Throughout the summer, she diligently visited five locations in her hometown to

investigate her research question:
"To what extent does surface type (concrete, asphalt and grass) affect surface temperature across multiple locations in Shelton, CT, and how

might these differences contribute to the urban heat island effect?" Using an infrared thermometer, she recorded more than 350 observations between June 15 and July 7. She will now analyze her data statistically to determine whether her findings support her hypothesis. In the classroom, Nadia consistently completes and submits her assignments promptly, collaborates effectively with her classmates and makes thoughtful contributions to class discussions. Through her curiosity, independent inquiry,

and meaningful engagement with others, she exemplifies the IB learner profile attributes of an inquirer, thinker, and communicator."

Dingle, Ireland Trip Wraps Up

Our Lancers packed a lot into the last few days in Ireland! They explored Inch Beach and Killarney National Park, visited a historic monastery and castle, enjoyed Mass at St. Mary’s Church, and explored the Dingle Aquarium. Students also took part in their final SHU class on Celtic Religion, made replica ancient coins, visited a 4,500-year-old wedge tomb, and hiked to Eask Tower for incredible 360° views of the ocean and Dingle Bay. So many adventures, learning experiences, and memories!

Freshman Retreat

Campus Ministry sponsored the annual Freshman Class Retreat on Wednesday. The theme of the day was “Faith Survival Skills.” Students celebrated Mass with our new chaplain, Fr. Oyode, made snack bags for neighbors in need at nOURish Food Pantry in Bridgeport with Ms. Medoff, heard a talk from Fr. Oyode, played games, enjoyed lunch, and participated in small-group activities led by upperclassmen in Campus Ministry.

Optical Illusion Spider Webs!

While the students’ clay pieces are drying, they are working on these cool Optical Illusion Spider Webs! Using Prismacolor colored pencils, students vary the amount of pressure they apply to create changes in value and color intensity. Their final webs appear to have a sense of movement and dimension!

Graffiti-Style Name Designs

Students in Foundations 1 studios created graffiti-style name designs on their sketchbook covers. It's so amazing to see all the different interpretations and color schemes. Here are four samples from the period B class. (Boat, Tyler Parks '29, Billboard, Javel Black '30, Banana, Grace O'Brien '29 and Pink Lettering, Nerushka Lopez '29.)

IB French Students Explore Identity

IB French-I students (Period E) are learning about Identity, the first of five IB course requirements, and have creatively written their unique stories using French adjectives and color in fingerprint designs! The class is further exploring health, beliefs, values, subcultures, and what makes us who we are!

French III Gets Creative!

French III (Period A) is being creative again! What better way is there for learning new vocabulary than to draft and build the lesson? Students designed their own cars … labeling the parts, en français, before revealing their state-of-the-art products.

Turning Selfies Into Art

Students in Photoshop took self-portraits and then used Photoshop to transform them into Pop Art! Pictured here posing with their Pop Art creations: Tegh Mohel, Jack Porto, Thano Papachristou, Maggie Bujdud, Anabelle Jahn and Lil Knapp
