| | This week's Academic Spotlight is on Stephanie Warycha, who was nominated by her math teacher, Ms. Chiu. "Stephanie comes into class everyday with a smile and a cheerful greeting. She is focused during the lesson, listening attentively while taking careful, color-coded notes and trying every problem. When she gets stuck she looks back in her notebook and asks me or other students for help. She takes responsibility for her own learning, coming to see me for extra help at least once a week and has been steadily improving on her quiz and test grades. With her positive attitude, open mind and strong work ethic, Stephanie is a joy to have in class and I can't wait to see what she does next." | |
Mrs. Almeida’s AP Biology students dove into two exciting days of hands-on discovery in microbiology and anatomy and physiology with Dr. Christina Morra and Dr. Marian
Leal of SHU. On the first day, Dr. Morra visited our biology lab to teach students techniques for collecting, incubating, and analyzing microorganisms and investigating
how disinfectants affect microbial growth. Students collected and plated samples from locations around the school, selected a disinfectant to test, and sent their agar plates to the SHU microbiology lab for incubation. On the second day, students explored spinal
reflexes, observed the knee-jerk response, and investigated their bodies’ responses to exercise by measuring heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation and perfusion index in the A&P lab. In the SHU Microbiology Lab, they eagerly examined microbial
growth on their plates, compared results across collection sites, and evaluated their disinfectants’ effectiveness. Their surprising findings sparked lively discussions and brought biology to life through exploration, collaboration, and discovery. Our thanks to Dr. Morra and Dr. Leal for hosting this exciting, educational program!
| Exploring Buddhism at Sacred Heart | Students in Ms. Medoff and Mr. Cotto’s IB World Religion classes went to Sacred Heart this week to visit with the Buddhist chaplain, Venerable Shim Bo. He explained the Eightfold Path, lead a session on meditation, and handed out some treats. We were grateful for the chance to focus on being present and to learn from his vast experience and kindness. | Thank you to the several hundred families who joined us for our Open House last Saturday. Thanks for helping to spread the word! | | We celebrated our grandparents this week! Our special guests joined us for Mass, tasty treats and bingo. Thank you to Chaplain Fr. Thomas Oyode for leading our liturgy and Director of Campus Ministry Jessica Medoff for being our bingo caller. We are grateful to our parent volunteers who supported this event. Tap here to view more images. | Mrs. Lapadula’s junior theology students recently created game-based projects on what they’ve learned about the sacrament of Baptism. This week, students played each other‘s games, matching games, board games, Jeopardy, virtual escape rooms, and even a physical escape room that took us all over the campus! | Stretching Pixels in Photoshop | Students in Photoshop for Photography created the viral "Pixel Stretch Effect" to either personal photos or photos that they found online. Thamara Aguilar-Paz - Bowie, Jaise Greaves - SWC Champs, Zyair Emanuel - Christ the Redeemer and Kevin Kane - Jeter. | Here are the final ghost creations from the students in 3D/Sculpture studio. These detailed sculptures are only about a fist size tall and very well constructed. All of the students did a great job! | | Trick or Treat in Our Boo Boulevard! | The NDP Horizons Club and Campus Ministry is sponsoring a trick-or-treat experience (a modified indoor version of Trunk or Treat from past years) on Wednesday, October 28, from 3:30-5:00. Football
The Lancers suffered the first loss of the year, 20-9 against Newtown. Quarterback Jordan Razor hit running back Jaylan Bellamy with a touchdown pass, and kicker Santiago Mazo-Lopez added a field goal for the scores. Captains Bryant Tarczali and Jeremiah James led the defense in tackles. The Lancers look to get back on track at home Friday night against New Milford.
Volleyball
The girls have qualified for the state playoffs while maintaining their current No. 5 seed in the SWC. After a tough five-set loss to Newtown last Friday, the Lancers showed tremendous resilience and determination. Despite losing All-State player Jodi Houston to a knee injury in the first set, the team stepped up in a big way and continued to compete at a high level.
The Lancers bounced back this week with victories over Bunnell and Bullard-Havens Tech.
The team's Pink Game is this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.! Please come out, support the team, and help us make this event a success. We hope to see you there!
