United States Standards for Beans & Lentils

The USDA's Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) is revising the United States Standards for Beans to:
  1. Establish a class and grade requirement chart for "chickpea" also known as "garbanzo bean
  2. Establish a new grade determining factor, definition, factor limits, and visual reference image for "contrasting chickpeas"
The USDA's Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) is revising the United States Standards for Lentils to:
  1. Establish an additional grading factor, definition, grade requirements, and visual reference images for "wrinkled lentils" 
  2. Establish a special grade, definition, special grade requirements, designation, and visual reference images for "green lentils"
The effective date for both the beans and lentils revisions will be August 1, 2017.


U.S. Drought Monitor

This U.S. Drought Monitor week saw scattered showers and thunderstorm across the lower Midwest and the central and southern Plains. In west-central Illinois, an area of abnormally dry was added to the map. Average temperatures for the week in the Midwest were generally a few degrees above normal in the southern portion and temperatures in the northern portions were slightly below normal.Areas of severe drought and extreme drought expanded in Montana, south-central North Dakota and northwestern South Dakota. 

Looking ahead, the upper Midwest will see a high probability of above-normal temperatures.

Corn:
Illinois  | 33% of corn has silk  | 63% is in good to excellent condition

Indiana  | 19% of corn has silk  | 48% is in good to excellent condition

Minnesota  | 3% of corn has silk |  80% is in good to excellent condition

North Dakota  | 4% of corn has silk | 52% is in good to excellent condition

South Dakota  |  2% of corn has silk |  37% is in good to excellent condition

Ohio  | 10% of corn has silk | 53% is in good to excellent condition
 

Soybeans:
Illinois  | 31% of soybeans have bloomed compared to 15% last year | 66% is in good to excellent condition

Indiana  | 31% of soybeans have bloomed  | 50% is in good to excellent condition

Minnesota  | 25% of soybeans have bloomed  | 73% is in good to excellent condition

North Dakota | 24% of soybeans have bloomed  | 47% is in good to excellent condition

South Dakota | 29% of soybeans have bloomed compared to 15% in 2016  | 34% is in good to excellent condition

Ohio  | 25% of soybeans have bloomed  | 53% is in good to excellent condition

 
Winter Wheat:
Illinois  |  95% of winter wheat has been harvested 

Indiana  |  78% of winter wheat has been harvested compared to 56% last year 

Ohio  |  77% of winter wheat has been harvested

Spring Wheat
Minnesota   | 95% of spring wheat has headed | 85% is in good to excellent condition

North Dakota | 79% of spring wheat has headed compared to 57% last year  | 36% is in good to excellent condition

South Dakota |  98% of spring wheat has headed compared to 92% in 2016 | 10% is in good to excellent condition


Barley
Minnesota   | 95% of barley has headed | 84% is in good to excellent condition

North Dakota | 81% of barley has headed compared to 57% last year  | 46% is in good to excellent condition

USDA 2017 Acreage Report

Corn planted area for all purposes in 2017 is estimated at 90.0 million acres. Compared to 2016, planted acres are down or unchanged in 38 of the 48 estimated states. 

Soybeans planted area is estimated at 89.5 million acres which is up 7 percent from 2016 and is the new record high. 

All wheat planted area for 2017 is estimated at 45.7 million acres, down 9 percent from last year. The 2017 winter wheat planted area is at 32.8 million acres. Of this total, 23.8 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 5.61 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.42 million acres are White Winter. Other spring wheat planted are for 2017 is estimated at 10.9 million acres. This total includes 10.3 million acres of Hard Red Spring wheat. Durum is estimated at 1.92 million acres, down 20 percent from 2016.
