On-line Learning Opportunities Available
The Transportation Learning Network (TLN) is a division of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) at North Dakota State University. TLN is governed by a committee representing each of the participating state DOTs and Center for Transformative Infrastructure Preservation and Sustainability (CTIPS)—formerly Mountain-Plains Consortium (MPC)—universities.
TLN was developed to serve the transportation interests of the region and complements the efforts of its various members. It provides access to information and expertise not readily available to transportation professionals in the region. TLN identifies, schedules, distributes and warehouses technology transfer for its members.

Research on Rail Right-of-Way Signage Points Way to Reduced Injuries and Fatalities
Research at Colorado State University shows that action-conveying and emotionally motivated signs are more effective at influencing pedestrian safety and decision-making at railroad crossings. They also found that considering the specific needs of high-risk populations, such as younger individuals and males, targeted interventions can be developed to address the unique challenges of these groups. Researchers surveyed more than 1,000 individuals to identify misconceptions in public knowledge about railroad right-of-way crossings in a variety of contexts and to identify how mitigation and messaging can best reduce railroad right-of-way crossings. The research will help transportation authorities, policymakers, and local communities improve safety at pedestrian-railroad crossings and reduce the incidence of accidents and fatalities.
