By the time you receive this newsletter, you will be ready to welcome trick-or-treaters at your front door. Fall is well underway, which means we are preparing for our Annual Meeting and Dinner to be held in Albany on December 5, 2019 at Sixty State Place, a historic Beaux-Art former bank headquarters once known as a “temple of finance.”

On a recent weekend the Judiciary experienced a widespread outage of its CM/ECF filing system. Although the Northern District of New York was not significantly impacted, the outage provides an opportune time to remind our stakeholders of the procedures in place should the Court’s CM/ECF website experience a technical failure.

Shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2019, the District Judges, Magistrate Judges and Bankruptcy Judges of the Northern District, cups of coffee in hand, filtered into the theater at the Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, to watch the film Garrow (Adirondack Films 2018), about Robert Francis Garrow, Sr., the serial rapist and spree killer who terrorized the North Country between 1960 and 1978.

The judicial and political history of Northern New York is replete with dynamic legal stories that have helped shape not only how the Northern District looks today, but also how jurisprudence has developed in a number of legal areas that remain critical to our current understanding of American law. In one rare case, the fruitful family tree of a distinguished Northern New York family shaped the judicial and political landscape of our state and our nation.
