The Amazing Life of Judge Mordue

On November 1, 2019, Judge Mordue gave a fireside chat, at Syracuse University College of Law, in which he took a rapt audience through his life, including his stint as a Syracuse University football player, his distinguished military service in the Vietnam War, his prosecution of serial killer Robert Garrow, and his service as a federal and state judge. We published an article about this chat in February 2020, and are sharing it again to underscore what an amazing person we had the honor of knowing.

Special Solicitude: A Quick Guide to its Application and Limitations in Civil Litigation in the Northern District of New York

It is well settled that pro se litigants must be afforded special solicitude, which requires their filings to be liberally construed throughout all steps of civil litigation. This article by Ariel Shuster summarizes relevant case law and procedural rules regarding (1) how special solicitude applies at key stages of civil litigation in the Northern District of New York, (2) additional obligations that are imposed on a represented party because of the involvement of a pro se litigant, and (3) circumstances under which special solicitude can be revoked.

Chief Bankruptcy Judge Diane Davis Retires

Chief Bankruptcy Judge Diane Davis retired earlier this month, after serving for 14 years on the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York. Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes announced that Judge Wendy Kinsella is the new Chief Bankruptcy Judge.
