Before I provide my year-end recap of the Federal Court Bar Association’s activities and achievements, I want to congratulate Judge Anne Nardacci on her recent confirmation as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of New York. Judge Nardacci spent the last 20 years litigating complex commercial cases in district courts nationwide. And she will soon discover, if she has not already, that she was confirmed to one of our nation’s most collegial benches whose judges discharge their duties with wisdom and care. Judge Nardacci’s confirmation is particularly welcome since she fills a seat that sat vacant for nearly seven years. But we’ve managed as a district due in large measure to the hard work of our judges and court staff. I want to specifically acknowledge our senior judges for their selfless commitment to our district. Although they are under no obligation to do so, many of them continue to carry substantial caseloads. Our district would be in dire straits without their service, and we owe them a special debt of gratitude.

Featured Photo: A Great Turnout for Pro Bono Training in Albany and Syracuse | |
On September 29 and 30, 2022, the FCBA sponsored two in-person CLE trainings in Albany and Syracuse for court-appointed pro bono attorneys handling civil rights cases. Former FCBA President Mike Sciotti once again put together a comprehensive and informative program, which took practitioners from trial preparation and opening statements to jury verdict and post-verdict considerations in a Section 1983 case.
We continue to see a growing need for attorneys willing to handle these matters in our district, and our panelists highlighted the unique opportunities that these cases can provide for both experienced practitioners and newly admitted attorneys who are looking to gain trial experience. We were encouraged by the great turnout and are looking forward to hosting this program again on October 4, 2023 in Albany and October 5, 2023 in Syracuse - so mark your calendars!

This year’s golf event was held on September 19, 2022, at the Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady. Despite the dire forecast, over 45 members and friends came out to play on the beautiful 18-hole parkland course. “Luck favors the prepared” as they say, and our last-minute tweaks to the schedule paid off: all the golfers were able to get in their last strokes before the sky opened up!
Special thanks to our golf sponsors: Dreyer Boyajian, Porter Law Group, Whiteman Osterman and Hanna, Bond Schoeneck & King, O’Connor & Partners, and Barclay Damon.
