The Northeast Region of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council, located on the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) campus, believes it is important to bring our community together to advance the STEM movement, which is transforming the nation.

  
KeminRecognize an Outstanding Iowa STEM Teacher

Do you know a STEM teacher that goes above and beyond?

Nominations are open for the 2018 I.O.W.A. (Innovative, Outstanding, Worldly, Academic) STEM Teacher Award sponsored by Kemin Industries. This award celebrates teachers 
whose leadership and dedication to STEM in Iowa increases students' interest and awareness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
  
One teacher from each of the six STEM regions will receive a $1,500 award along with an additional $1,500 to be used in their classroom. Deadline for submissions is October 6, and recipients will be announced January 2018.  Nominate a STEM teacher today at www.stemaward.fluidreview.com

Each year, the Northeast Region partners with local organizations to bring exciting family STEM festivals to communities across the region.  The goal of these events is to show K-12 students and their families how exciting science, technology, engineering and math can be.  In order to make these events successful, we need hands-on activities from businesses and educators across the region.

BESTSTEM BEST Applications Due September 15

Does your school district want to be the next STEM BEST® model in Iowa?
  
The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council invites proposals from interested communities ready to bridge the world of work with the classroom. Of the submitted proposals, the STEM Council will award 15 Iowa STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) models across the six STEM regions.
  
All Iowa K-12 private and public schools and school districts are eligible to apply. Awarded applicants will receive $25,000 to be matched with local cost-share, each earning designation as an Iowa STEM BEST Partner. The application window will close on Friday, September 15, and recipients will be announced in late October.   Get started today at   www.IowaSTEM.gov/STEMBEST/Proposal.

We'd like to say 'Thank You' to the following board members as they complete their terms with the Northeast Iowa Regional STEM Advisory Board: 
  • Scott Greenhalgh, University of Northern Iowa. (board member since 2012) 
  • Marcia Powell, Oelwein Community School District. (board member since 2012)
Both have served on a variety of committees during their tenure on the board and will continue to remain active STEM partners. We truly appreciate them sharing their time and talents with the advisory board.
     
We are excited to welcome two new members to the regional advisory board: 
  • Lisa Chizek, North Tama County Community School District  
  • Dorreen Hayek, University of Northern Iowa
We would also like to thank Bill Holland, with JB Holland Construction in Decorah, and Mason Kuhn, with the University of Northern Iowa, for their continued commitment to the regional advisory board. Both will serve another three year term.

How many times have you heard a student ask, "When will I ever use this? The Iowa STEM Teacher Externships Program helps teachers answer that age-old question.

During this past summer, 16 educators in Northeast Iowa worked side-by-side with knowledgeable and skilled industry employees who helped bring the classroom curriculum to life. Teacher Externships provided educators with the exposure to answer questions about real-world application and future careers.
