Breakfast with Irish Minister Richard Bruton
On March 11, Richard Bruton, Ireland's Minister for Communications, Climate Action, and the Environment, spoke to NEC members at a breakfast at the Hampshire Hosue in Boston.  Minister Bruton discussed the important economic relationship between the US and Ireland.  He is pictured here with Board Member John Stadtler of PwC.

Rep. Joe Courtney
Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT) was the featured guest at a March 27 Capital Conversations breakfast in Washington, DC, hosted by Nelson Mullins.  The Congressman highlighted his work on issues ranging from defense to education. He is pictured here (right)  with Bill Klein of The MITRE Corporation. 
Washington Leaders' Conference - May 8 & 9
New Speakers & Committee Meetings Added - Register Now!
Registration is open for the Council's 2019 Washington Leaders' Conference (previously known as the Annual Spring Event).  The two-day conference will take place on May 8 and 9, 2019.  In addition to the new name,we are making other changes to the program, including a new welcome luncheon featuring a panel discussion with several prominent Washington journalists, as well as additional small group meetings for our policy committees with Administration officials and key Congressional staff. 

Recent additions to the speaker lineup include New York Times' Jonathan Martin, Politico's Anna Palmer, and Rep. Jared Golden.  Several policy committee meetings, including Higher Education Committee and Trade Working Group meetings have been added.

New England Higher Education Policy Conference
Rep. Lori Trahan to Headline NEC's First Annual Regional Higher Ed Conference
The New England Council is pleased to announce our first "New England Higher Education Policy Conference," which will take place on Wednesday, April 24, from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Northeastern University in Boston. Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA), a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, will deliver a luncheon keynote, followed by panel discussions on such topics as Higher Education Act (HEA) Reauthorization and Workforce Development.

DC Dialogue on NECN
March: Rep. Jim McGovern, Greentown Labs' Emily Reichert
The most recent episode of DC Dialogue aired on NECN on Sunday, March 24, 2019.  In the first segment, Jim Brett and Peter Howe were joined by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), who discussed his recent work in the House of Representatives and his new role as the Chairman of the House Rules Committee.  The second segment featured a discussion with Emily Reichert, CEO of Greentown Labs, the nation's largest clean tech incubator, who highlighting the innovative work taking place at Greentown and shared her thoughts on the Green New Deal proposal. 

April: NHIOP's Neil Levesque on 2020 Election; UMass Boston's Katherine Newman on Retirement Savings
The next episode of DC Dialogue will air on NECN on Sunday, April 21, at 11:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.  Our first guest will be Neil Levesque, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, who will discuss the latest developments in the 2020 Presidential race.  We'll also welcome Katherine Newman, Interim Chancellor of UMass Boston, who will discuss the importance of retirement savings for our region and new policy proposals aimed at bolstering savings.  Be sure to tune in or watch online!
Policy Committee Updates
Financial Services Committee Hears from House Members
In March, NEC Financial Services Committee members had the opportunity to hear from several senior members of the House Financial Services Committee.  First, on May 5, committee members met with Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) following a Council-wide Congressional Roundtable in Boston to learn more about his recent work on issues impacting the financial services industry.  Later that week, on March 8, Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) briefed members on matters currently before the committee and his own priorities on a committee conference call.  For more information, please contact Griffin Doherty.
Healthcare Committee Briefed on Opioid Report
On March 25, the NEC Healthcare Committee met at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.  The meeting featured a presentation by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation on its recent report on the economic impact of the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts.  The committee also discussed plans for meeting during the 2019 Washington Leaders' Conference as well as other initiatives for the year.  For more information, please contact Sean Malone.
Trade Working Group Briefing with Senate Finance Committee
On March 19, members of the NEC Trade Working Group participated in a conference call briefing with Nasim Fussell, Chief International Trade Counsel for the Senate Finance Committee.  Ms Fussell updated members on matters before the committee, including the USMCA, and took a variety of questions.  The working group also discussed plans for meeting during the 2019 Washington Leaders' Conference as well as other initiatives for the year.  For more information, please contact Peter Phipps.
