Recent Programs Featuring Members of the New England Congressional Delegation
February was a busy month with five member of the New England Congressional delegation speaking to Council members during virtual Capitol Hill Report programs--including the newest member of the delegation.  These programs offer members a great opportunity to hear directly from our region's policymakers on the issues they are working on in Congress and how federal policy will impact our region's continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.  In February, we heard from:
  • February 1: Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA)
  • February 9: Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME)
  • February 17: Rep. John Larson (D-CT)
  • February 19: Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA)
  • February 22: Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI)

Expert Panel Discusses Environmental Policy Under Biden, New Congress
On February 2, 2021, the NEC Energy & Environment Committee hosted a special program focused on the outlook for federal environmental policy in 2021. A panel of environmental policy experts shared their insights on what to expect from the Biden Administration and the 117th Congress as it relates to environmental regulation and legislation.  The panelists were:

Brigham & Women's Expert Discusses Mass Vaccination Sites
On February 26, 2021, the Council partners with the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals (COBTH) to host a special briefing on mass vaccination sites.  The program featured a presentation by Dr. Eric Goralnick, Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness at NEC member Brigham and Women's Hospital.  Dr. Goralnick is providing medical leadership to the COVID-19 mass vaccination effort at Gillette Stadium.

Panelists Highlight Second Chance Pell Program
In recent weeks, an Op-Ed piece authored by New England Council President & CEO Jim Brett has appeared in a variety of regional publications.  In the column, Jim outlines several key federal priorities for the region, including additional COVID-19 relief, as well as investments in infrastructure and clean energy.  He also discusses the growing clout of the New England Congressional delegation and how they will play a key role in advancing the region's priorities.  
Higher Ed Committee Hosts Prison Education Discussion
Panelists Highlight Second Chance Pell Program
On February 23, The New England Council's Higher Education Committee hosted a disucssion Second Chance Pell and Prison Education.  Presenters discussed the recent overturn of the ban on Second Chance Pell, which allows incarcerated students to now access this critical support to advance their education.  Presenters included representatives of The Educational Justice Institute at MIT, The Vera Institute of Justice, the University of Maine at Augusta, and Mount Wachusett Community College.  Participants also heard from a student who is currently incarcerated in Maine and pursuing his doctorate thanks to the Second Chance Pell program.

Introducing the Doherty Twins!
The New Engalnd Council family is growing!  We are pleased to share with you that Griffin Doherty, Director of Federal Affairs in our Boston office, and his wife, Meghan, recently welcomed twins!  

Evelyn Elizabeth Doherty and Daniel Edward Doherty II were born on Tuesday, February 9. Evelyn was 5.2 lbs, and Daniel was 6.3 lbs.  Mom, Dad, and the babies are all home and doing well!
