2019 Annual Dinner
1500 Guests Celebrate New Englanders of the Year at 2019 Annual Dinner
On the evening of October 21, 2019, over 1500 New England Council members and other guests from throughout the region gathered at the Seaport Hotel/World Trade Center in Boston for The New England Council's 2019 Annual Dinner.  At the dinner, the Council honored four remarkable individuals as New Englanders of the Year:
  • Margaret Brennan, Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent, CBS News and Moderator of "Face the Nation"
  • Roger W. Crandall, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, MassMutual
  • The Honorable Maggie Hassan, United States Senator, New Hampshire
  • Jerry Remy, Red Sox Color Analyst, NESN; Former Second Baseman, MLB

New England Innovates: On the Front Lines of Cybersecurity
Senior Commerce Department Official Headlines Cyber Forum
Amy Carnevale of K&L Gates, Assistant Secretary Diane Rinaldo, and NEC President & CEO Jim Brett.
The New England Council presented the fifth event in our "New England Innovates" series on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at K&L Gates in Boston.  "New England Innovates: On the Front Lines of Cybersecurity" highlighted the role that New England businesses and organizations are playing to ensure that both the public and private sectors are protected from and prepared for cyber threats and attacks.   

Assistant Secretary of Commerce Diane Rinaldo, who also serves as the Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, delivered keynote remarks.  Following Assistant Secretary Rinaldo's remarks, a panel of NEC members highlighted their initiatives to ensure that the region and nation are safeguarded against cyber threats, and discussed how New England can continue to be a leader in the cybersecurity industry.  Panelists included representatives of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Eversource, IBM, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, and the MITRE Corporation.

NEC Members Visit Cuba to Explore Business Opportunities
Reps. McGovern & DeLauro Join NEC Members for Cuba Visit
In early October, New Engalnd Council President & CEO Jim Brett and a group of Council members representing a diverse array of industries participated in a trip to Cuba to learn more about economic opportunities there.  U.S. Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), as well as former Representative Bill Delahunt--all of whom have long advocated for improved US relations with Cuba--also participated in the trip.  The visit included meetings with key Cuban government officials, and representatives of local industry and academia. Council Elects Six New Board Members
Six Respected Business Leaders Join NEC Board
At a recent New England Council Board of Directors meeting in Boston, six respected regional business leaders to join the board.  The new directors are:
  • Gerald (Jerry) Daly, Senior Vice President, Optum 
  • Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., President, Endicott College
  • Steve Duvel, Senior Vice President, New England Division, Gilbane Building Company
  • Douglas Robbins, Vice President, Air Force Programs, Center for Programs, and Technology,The MITRE Corporation
  • Christos Ross, Executive Vice President and Head of Integrated Supply Chain Operations at MilliporeSigma
  • Lisa Wieland, Chief Executive Officer at the Massachusetts Port Authority
"These six new directors each bring a very impressive background and unique perspective to The New England Council's Board of Directors," said James T. Brett, President and CEO of The New England Council. "I look forward to working with each of them in the years to come toward our shared goals of economic growth and a high quality of life in New England."
DC Dialogue on NECN
October: Rep. Katherine Clark Talks Impeachment, 2020, Gun Control
The most recent episode of DC Dialogue aired on New England Cable News (NECN) on Sunday, October 13, 2019.   Jim Brett and Peter Howe were joined by U.S. Representative Katherine Clark , Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus. In a wide ranging conversation, Congresswoman Clark shared her thoughts on everything from the President's decision to withdraw troops at the Syrian border, to the ongoing impeachment inquiry, to some of House Democrats' top legislative priorities, including legislation to address gun violence.  Later in the show, Jim shared updates from a recent visit to Cuba with a group of legislators and business leaders who traveled to the island nation to learn more about the potential business opportunities there.

The next episode of DC Dialogue will air on NECN on Sunday, November 17, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.  Marcy Reed, President of National Grid Massachusetts and Executive Vice President of US Policy & Social Impact, will join Jim and Peter to discuss some of the most pressing energy challenges facing the region.  Neil Levesque, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, will also be a guest to analyze some of the latest developments in the 2020 Presidential race.  Be sure to tune in!
