New England Innovates: On the Front Lines of Cybersecurity
Top Commerce Department Official to Keynote Cyber Event
The New England Council will present the next event in our "New England Innovates" series on Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at K&L Gates in Boston.   "New England Innovates: On the Front Lines of Cybersecurity"will highlight the role that New England businesses and organizations are playing to ensure that both the public and private sectors are protected from and prepared for cyber threats and attacks.   

Assistant Secretary of Commerce Diane Rinaldo, who also serves as the Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, will deliver keynote remarks.  Following Assistant Secretary Rinaldo's remarks, a panel of NEC members will highlight their initiatives to ensure that the region and nation are safeguarded against cyber threats, and discuss how New England can continue to be a leader in the cybersecurity industry.  Panelists will include representatives of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Eversource, IBM, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, and the MITRE Corporation.

DC Dialouge on NECN
October Show to Feature Rep. Katherine Clark
The next episode of DC Dialogue will air on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on New England Cable News (NECN).  Jim Brett and Peter Howe will be joined by Representative Katherine Clark for an in-depth conversation about some of the most pressing issues before Congress this fall.  Congresswoman Clark has represented Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District, and she is a member of the influential House Appropriations Committee.  She is also Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, making her the second most powerful woman in Congress.

Policy Committee Updates
Rep. Lynch Talks FinTech with Financial Services Committee

On September 23, 2019, NEC Financial Services Committee members met with Rep. Stephen Lynch, a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, at a breakfast meeting hosted by Liberty Mutual in Boston.  Rep. Lynch briefed members on his work as the new Chair of the House Financial Technology Task Force, as well as other issues expected to come before the committee in the  months ahead.

Higher Ed Committee Briefing with Sen. Sanders' Staff
On September 19, 2019, the NEC Higher Education Committee hosted a conference call briefing with Donni Turner, education policy advisory to Senator Bernie Sanders, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee.  Ms. Turner briefed members on the Senator's College for All Act, and other matters before the committee.  For more information on this briefing or the Higher Education Committee, please contact Taylor Pichette.  
Council Members Visit Hill Offices in Support of USMCA
On September 25, 2019, a group of New England Council members representing a range of industries throughout the region visited a number of New England  Congressional offices to advocate for the approval of the US-Canada-Mexico Agreement, which would provide much-need updates to NAFTA.  This was the second such "Hill Day," following up on a day of Congressional meetings in June.  For more information on this issue or the Trade Working Group, please contact Peter Phipps.
NEC Endorses Seante Bill to Reauthorize Export-Import Bank
On September 12, 2019, The New England Council sent a letter to each member of the region's Senate delegation urging them to support bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the charter of the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. (Ex-Im Bank), the nation's official export credit agency.  The bank's charter expires at the end of September.  In the letter, the Council notes that the bank supports a variety of exporters int he region, and in turn, thousand of jobs.  For more information on this letter or the Trade Working Group, please contact Peter Phipps.
