Carol Rodland Viola Masterclass

Saturday, November 11, 2023 | 10 AM - 12 PM | Keller Room

Acclaimed for her “larger than life, sweetly in tune, infinitely variegated”, and “delicious” playing, Carol Rodland enjoys a multi-faceted international career as a concert and recording artist and teacher. First prize winner of the Washington International Competition and the Universal Editions Prize winner of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, she made her solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra as a teenager.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, she has commissioned, premiered, and recorded works of Kenji Bunch, Dan Coleman, Adolphus Hailstork, David Liptak, Christopher Theofanidis, and Augusta Read Thomas. Also a dedicated and award-winning teacher, Ms. Rodland is Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at the Juilliard School and an artist-faculty member at the Perlman Music Program, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Karen Tuttle Coordination Workshop. Previous positions have included professorships at the Eastman School of Music, where she was also Co-Chair of the String Department, at New England Conservatory, where she was recognized with the “Krasner Award for Excellence in Teaching”, at the Musikhochschule “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, and at Arizona State University.

In 2009, Ms. Rodland founded “If Music Be the Food…”, a fully volunteer benefit concert series whose mission is to increase awareness and support for the hungry in the local community through the sharing of great music. “If Music Be the Food…” has inspired musicians across the country to implement initiatives based on this concept in their own communities.

Ms. Rodland studied on full scholarship with Karen Tuttle at the Juilliard School and as a Fulbright Scholar with Kim Kashkashian at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. She had the unique privilege of serving as teaching assistant to both of her mentors.

Asiya Korepanova Piano Masterclass

Saturday, November 11, 2023 | 3 PM - 4:30 PM | Pierce Hall

The only pianist currently performing Liszt's 24 Etudes as a single program and one of few to tout a concerto list that features over 60 works, Asiya Korepanova is a pianistic powerhouse and rapidly rising star. A result of her uncompromising dedication to the arts, Ms. Korepanova is recognized not only for her achievements as a pianist, but also for her work as a transcriber, composer, visual artist, and poet.

An author of solo piano transcriptions of Richard Strauss’ 'Ein Heldenleben', Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, Mussorgsky's 'Songs and Dances of Death' and Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony, Asiya studied composition with Albert Leman, the composition chair of Moscow Conservatory and a student of Dmitry Shostakovich.

Additionally, she creates original multimedia projects featuring her poetry and artworks for piano music by Liszt, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky.

Born to a musical family in Russia, Asiya Korepanova made her orchestral debut at the age of nine with Mozart’s Concerto No. 8, having composed her own cadenza for the occasion. Her early musical awards include the Russian Federation’s President Award for “Exceptional Achievement in the Arts,” and a Gold Medal at the 2012 Nina Wideman International Piano Competition.

Since immigrating to the U.S. in 2012, Korepanova has garnered national attention with performances at the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, the Phillips Collection, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series, the International Miami Piano Festival, the Bargemusic Series, and many others. Her recitals have been broadcast on CNN, NPR stations, WFMT, and WETA.

In 2023, Asiya is a featured artist at the prestigious Friends of Chamber Music of Miami, performing complete Rachmaninoff solo piano music in 6 recitals. She celebrates the premiere of her latest transcription––Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony, and the release of scores of her compositions: the 'Poéme' for alto saxophone and piano and 'Con Brio' for two pianos, as well as transcriptions of works by Chopin, Schumann, Amy Beach, Faure, Mussorgsky, Franck, and Bach.
