Community Connections: Events, Opportunities, Resources

Welcome, Emma Simons-Araya!
Community Program and Partnership Manager
We are thrilled to welcome Emma Simons-Araya, our newly hired Community Program and Partnerships Manager!

Emma joins the NECC having recently moved from Chicago and brings with her a wealth of leadership skills and experience building partnerships between diverse communities in cities across the country including Southeast Los Angeles, where she grew up.

NECC’s Community Programs and Partnerships Manager role is a new position at the NECC that was developed as part of the center’s commitment to providing community-responsive programming and expanding equitable access to the center’s programs for low-income, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized people, groups, and organizations.

Fun facts about Emma? Emma played in a punk rock band, and was a guitar instructor/band coach for a rock and roll camp for girls, and before moving to Portland she signed up online for a Multnomah County library card.

Feel free to stop by the office and say hello! You can get in touch with Emma by emailing programs@necommunitycenter.org

Welcome, Emma!
Hollywood Theater Supports Local Nonprofits
The Hollywood Theatre is a Portland nonprofit and historical landmark known nationwide for its award-winning film programming, innovative educational programs, and financial support of local filmmakers. Keeping in this tradition, the Hollywood Theatre recently launched a new initiative: Community Benefit Screenings. Local nonprofit organizations can apply to host a benefit movie screening and 100% of the ticketing proceeds go to the fundraising organization, less costs for film licensing.
The NECC is thrilled to be the first nonprofit organization selected to host a benefit screening under this new program. We invite everyone to come to the movies with us on Saturday, September 17 at 3pm for a matinee screening of RBG – the 2018 award-winning documentary about the life of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her landmark work for women’s rights. More details and online ticketing will be available soon so stay tuned!
Volunteer Spotlight: Duane Monroe
This month we want to extend a special shout-out to longtime NECC member Duane Monroe who has generously been volunteering his time and expertise towards the modernization of our ventilation, heating, and cooling system.

Over the past several months Duane, an Oregon State licensed mechanical engineer with over 30 years of professional experience, has spent upwards of a hundred hours providing free expert input on the final design and ongoing construction.

For Duane, the opportunity to provide input as both a retired engineer and member at the facility since the 1980s is particularly meaningful.

“It’s a cool facility and I think it’s important for the community to have places where people can meet, go and socialize. There are guys that I’ve played basketball with and I’ve known many of them for 20-30 years. I feel a connection to the community center and it functions best when people with different expertise get involved.”

Two major benefits from this project include improving the facility’s energy efficiency by more than 90% and significantly reducing our operating costs each a month.

As a smaller nonprofit that works hard to provide the best possible experience for all participants, we are very grateful to Duane for volunteering his time and expertise on an important long-term investment that will benefit all NECC community members.

If you see Duane wandering the halls at NECC (or hooping in the gym), please share your thanks for all his hard work. Thank you, Duane!
