NEECA Trail Ride Happening On Oct. 18th

We are SO excited to announce that plans are well underway for the FIRST EVER organized trail ride that will be happening at NEECA in a few weeks. We have hosted rides at other locations over the years (Lake Dennison, Wendell State Forest, etc.) but this will be the first time that riders will be able to park at NEECA and ride out from there.

Couple of important things to note:

  • Overnight camping will be available on Friday and/or Saturday night. You must notify us in advance if you want to camp on either of those nights by emailing Margo at westwindfm@aol.com.
  • Riders can choose to ride the approximately 4 mile NEECA trail system, or they can follow a marked 8 mile route across an abuttor's property over to the amazing trails at Cutthroat Brook Tree Farm.
  • NEHT affiliated
  • Rain Date: Oct. 25th
  • We have porta potties on-site, in addition to running water.
  • There are some panel stalls available to rent if you would like a secure spot to put your horse before/after the ride, or if you are camping overnight. $15/stall, contact Margo to reserve - first come, first served.
  • We will be hosting a cook-out (burgers/dogs/drinks, etc.) after the ride.
  • Pre-Registration is strongly encouraged. Please click here for more details, and information on how to sign up for this event.

Victims Of Our Own Success….

NEECA began about 25 years ago as an undeveloped parcel of land on New Sherborn Road in Athol, and a dream. Over the years, thanks entirely to the hard work and vision of some very dedicated people who realized how special NEECA was, that dream has evolved into an organization that currently manages a 250+ acre parcel of property that includes: two riding arenas, a driving arena, confidence course, round pen, and approximately 4+ miles of marked trails. In addition, NEECA now organizes over 30 events annually for local horse enthusiasts to participate in.

That’s the GOOD news. The not so good news is that while the responsibilities of maintaining the actual park, in addition to its calendar of events, has increased every year…. the number of people responsible for doing the work to make these things happen, unfortunately, has not. At present, the NEECA Board consists of 9 volunteers who, other than Tina Dixson who runs the gymkhana series every year, are entirely responsible for everything that happens at NEECA. Unfortunately, the ever-increasing responsibilities due to NEECA’s growth and expansion are starting to take their toll. As a result, we just don’t have enough “pep in our step” left this year to host the NEECA Fall Social, which takes up a LOT of time and effort to run successfully.

We truly regret having to cancel this longstanding NEECA tradition, and hope that we can get it back on the schedule for next year. But the need to cancel the Fall Social represents a growing challenge for NEECA. For us to continue NEECA’s impressive development, simply put, we need more help.

Please know that we are aware, and so very appreciative, of the volunteers who show up to help at the workday each spring, and at some of the other events held throughout the year (Triathlon, Hunter Pace, etc.) But for NEECA to continue to be able to offer the wide variety of events it is known for, we must have more people willing to step up to help organize some of our events. We currently have about 275 members, if even 10% of them could commit to helping with a specific event, the problem would be solved. No experience? We’ll be glad to train you. No time? That’s a challenge we all have, but whatever time you could give would be a big help. If everyone just committed to one event per year, we’d have more than enough help.

The big fear is that instead of continuing to grow and expand, as it has since its beginning, NEECA will start to stagnate and contract as people start to either burn and/or age out and are no longer able to do as much as they have. The Fall Social is our first red flag and has brought home the fact that changes need to happen soon in order for NEECA to continue to thrive and remain the incredible asset it has become to our regional horse community.

For more details as to what is involved in helping to coordinate an event, please follow this link. And remember, we will be MORE than happy to help mentor new coordinators as they "learn the ropes" but we really need to get some new people involved with helping out. Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and we hope you will be able to find the time to help out next year. :)

LAST GYMKHANA OF THE 2025 NEECA GYMKHANA SERIES IS HAPPENING ON SUNDAY, OCT. 12th.

NEECA Hunter Pace

The weather could not have been more ideal for NEECA's recent Hunter Pace. Not a cloud in the sky, not too hot-not too cold, just perfect all the way around. And the more than 40 riders who showed up to participate in this event made the most of it!

Both the warm-up arena, and the NEECA main arena, were made available for riders to warm up in before the start of the Hunter Pace. The main arena saw the debut of NEECA's brand new jumps, purchased earlier this year, and customized with NEECA's yellow/blue color theme. The jumps seemed to meet the approval of everyone.

We had three divisions: Hunter, Hill Topper, and Trail Rider. Teams of 2-4 riders left at 2 minute intervals and rode the course with the goal of matching the predetermined "pace time" for each division.

We were so pleased to get feedback from many of the riders about how nice the trails were, how well marked the course was, how easy the in/out parking was, and, most importantly of all, how welcomed they were made to feel. For us, that's what NEECA is all about!

A special shout out to Darlynn Oberg and Carol Boudreau for all of the hard work they did to make this event such a success! We've got a lot more pics on our FB page if you'd like to check them out.

NEECA Well Represented at GMHA

While showing at GMHA's Fall Driving CT, AT, & Derby this past weekend, we realized that we had several NEECA members and participants of NEECA DRIVERS there- showing and volunteering. Dot Rourke came up with the great idea to take a photo of them all with GMHA's 100th anniversary and the famous rooster!
