Library MakerFest: Register Now!

LMF19 is almost here! If your library is planning on having a table at the 'Fest, to share with others your maker know-how, register soon...the deadline is March 29!

If you're just planning on attending, you have a little longer than exhibiting libraries to register. The deadline for that is
April 5.

Technology Conference 2019

Ready for the return of our day-long conference on technology in libraries? We are too! While we're keeping the exact date and location under wraps for a teensy bit longer, we can tell you that the conference will be in Jacksonville in July. Clear your calendar and get set to enjoy a fantastic keynote speaker and some terrific presentations.

We will announce the specifics as well as a call for session presentations very soon - keep your eyes peeled!

School Librarians Spring Gathering

Dear School Librarians,

We know how hard it is for you to take time away from your students for professional development, so in 2019, NEFLIN's School Libraries Interest Group is hosting not one, but two opportunities for you to gather with your colleagues for learning and fun on a Saturday.   The Spring Gathering is being planned as we speak, and we encourage you to go ahead and  register to attend on Saturday, April 27th, at Orange Park Jr. High School.

Attendees at last Fall's Gathering enjoyed a presentation entitled "Windows & Mirrors:  Books Highlighting DIVerse Families" by UCF librarians, learned how to use Ozobots in programming,  shared ideas about promoting the SSYRA titles, and much more.  Agenda details are coming soon, and we promise it'll be every bit as useful and engaging as last year's was.  On top of that, you'll get the rare opportunity to interact with your colleagues from around Northeast Florida.

We hope to see you there!

Upcoming Interest Group Meetings

Want to be sure you stay up-to-date with your favorite Interest Group?  The best way to do so is to add your name to the group's email list.

We have many exciting meetings coming up - if you haven't participated in a group yet, we'd love to see you this Spring at the group of your choice!

We are excited that this quarter's Children's Services East meeting will take place at a new location - the Daytona Beach Regional Library!  Unfortunately, we'll just miss Bike Week.    Join us on Friday, March 22nd!

Our fairly new Teens Services group got off to a strong start last year - gather with your colleagues  on Thursday, March 28th, at NEFLIN to share programming ideas, resources, and experiences - both good and bad - that you have had working with this unique but wonderful age group.

Over in NEFLIN's western region, Children's Services West will be meeting at the Dixie County Public Library in Cross City on Friday, April 26th, to discuss how to find affordable and entertaining performers.  Come ready to share your experiences, ideas, and struggles!

We always love a chance to see the tech toys available at Jacksonville Public Library's Main Library - join facilitator Bridgett Cotton at Jax Makerspace on Wednesday, May 15th, for some hands-on experience with all of the cool stuff JPL offers.

That's just a few examples of what's coming up - go to http://www.neflin.org/interestgroups/ to see ALL of our scheduled Interest Group meetings!

My Favorite Tool

This month's American Libraries features some favorite tech tools recommended by library tech leaders - tools such as the MERGE Cube, which integrates STEM learning with Virtual Reality; Waverly Labs' Pilot earbuds and app for real-time language translation; and treehouse for online learning courses.

We'd like to share YOUR favorite tools with the NEFLIN membership.  What discovery have you made that has made your life easier, your work more efficient, your patrons happier, or your students more engaged?  Write up a 2-3 paragraph description of your Favorite Tool and how you use it, and we'll feature it in an upcoming newsletter.  Send your submissions to office@neflin.org with the subject "My Favorite Tool".

Speaking of
Library MakerFest, here's one more webinar before the big day to get yourself ready!

Makerspace activities don't always need to include robots, 3D printers, and other gadgets. This fun interactive workshop will explore free or low-cost hands-on program ideas for all ages - from circuits to toothbrush robots to cat castles. This session will have great ideas!

All ideas discussed will include a supply list and rough cost idea to help you with planning.

Diana Silveira presents regularly on implementing technology, best practices and privacy issues online. She also works with libraries to deploy new tech as well as develop new mobile and desktop websites.
