Originally called National Milk Month, National Dairy Month began in 1937 to promote the distribution of extra milk during the summer months when cows were sent out to graze.
With U.S. dairy farms producing approximately 21 billion gallons of milk annually, it's no surprise that nearly 99% of American households purchase milk! Dairy has no doubt become a staple in our daily lives. Yogurts, cheeses and ice creams are often found in on-the-go containers, making consumption easier than ever.
For years, NEL's analytical microbiology departments have been assisting dairy farms and manufacturers to ensure all products meet safety guidelines through our water and food testing services. Customers such as Casco Bay Creamery* and H.P. Hood* who pride themselves on finished products being every bit as safe as it is tasty. But did you know we take it one step further?
For nearly a decade, Northeast Lab's media manufacturing department has been supporting dairy farms through ongoing projects and research efforts conducted by some of the nation's leading animal health organizations.

Using NEL's TSA, MacConkey, and Edwards agar plates regularly, Cornell's Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) has been monitoring dairy cows for mastitis to improve and reduce the use of antibiotics in dairy animals.
Testing approximately 230,000 milk samples each year, the AHDC's Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS) program identifies the pathogens that are causing mastitis and make management recommendations based on culture results.
Dr. Michael Zurakowski, Senior Extension Veterinarian with QMPS explained, "We work with farms and veterinary clinics across the U.S. and Canada to teach mastitis pathogen culturing techniques with the intent to provide mastitis data for dairy animals to better target and reduce antibiotic use." This careful screening program equates to about 60-70% reduction in antibiotic use.
"There are so many groups working hard to create positive change and improve food production, and companies like NEL are a vital link between animal health and human health through diagnostics."
So whether you prefer cheese with crackers, yogurt with granola, a delicious ice cream cone or maybe just a cold glass of milk with some cookies, enjoy your favorite dairy products in the month of June, knowing that all efforts are being made to ensure only the highest quality products are readily available at your local grocer.

Homeownership Month
It was under President Bill Clinton's administration that Home Ownership Week was established back in 1995. In 2002, President George W. Bush expanded the observance to the entire month of June. Both were meant to encourage and spotlight the American Dream of homeownership.
When buying a home, clients should do their research and consider all important points of interest. How many bedrooms do you require? How many bathrooms? Do you need a space for entertaining?
Most importantly, clients need to be aware of potential health factors that may be present in the home. Are there mold issues? Is there radon in the water and/or air? If the old siding needs to be replaced,
is asbestos present?
Seeking the help of a home inspector may be one of the best things you can do during your home buying process. They can help you understand any potential hazards the home has and, when working with NEL, can present you with a report that details your water and air quality.
The Maine Coalition of Home Inspection Professionals can help you locate a Home Inspector near you. Please visit the link below for more information.

Fresh Fruits & Veggies Month
As the official start of Summer is quickly approaching, it's a perfect time to indulge in fresh fruits and vegetables to support a strong immune system and
healthy eating habits.
Did you know that purple vegetables contain anthocyanins? Early studies suggest this flavonoid has a lot of health benefits such as the prevention of heart disease, the prevention of some cancers, improved general health, and could even protect our brains as we age.
Visit your local Farmer's Markets and try something new. Read up on how to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your daily meal plans. Eat more purple options this Summer!

Fore! Indoor Air
A Casual Golf Outing to Support the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council
|
The Maine Indoor Air Quality Council (MIAQC) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to creating healthy, environmentally-sustainable indoor environments through education, communication, and advocacy.
In addition to being Maine's #1 educator and advocator for healthy indoor environments, each year the Council raises funds for their Radon Mitigation Fund which provides radon mitigation to 4-8 low-income families in Southern Maine.
You can help the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council create healthy indoor spaces where Maine citizens live, work, play, and learn. Supporting the Council ensures that Maine homes and businesses will continue to work toward this objective. What better way to support a great cause than to get out on the golf course and enjoy some fresh air!
Join NEL and the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council on June 7th at the Poland Spring Resort to support our neighbors and the amazing work the Council is doing.

Kate Bernier - Analytical QA/QC Manager
|
Kate has been an NEL teammate for a year this month. During her
short time at NEL, she has transitioned from our media manufacturing division to our analytical division. She exudes positivity and is always open to brainstorming to find a solution or implement changes.
We recently had a chance to chat with Kate about her time at NEL and here's what she had to say:
|
|
|
Can you tell us a little bit about your current job responsibilities at NEL?
Kate: I recently became the Analytical QA/QC Manager where I work to ensure that we're following the rules established by our accrediting bodies. I also work to make sure our analysts have the most up-to-date information possible regarding the testing they perform.
How have those responsibilities changed since you first started at NEL?
Kate: A lot has changed since I started working here a year ago! I originally worked as a QA/QC officer in the media manufacturing division and just recently transitioned to the analytical division. Two very different products/outcomes.
What do you love about working at NEL?
Kate: I get to spend every day with the most caring and hardworking people I've ever met.
If you could tell the world something they may not know about NEL, what would it be?
Kate: Although we may seem small, the products we manufacture here are used in facilities across the globe!
