Commission on Nuclear Energy and American Leadership Releases “A Blueprint for the Future”

Report finds that reliable nuclear energy is essential to the Nation’s energy future and offers a practical roadmap to restore the U.S. to global nuclear leadership.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Commission on Nuclear Energy and American Leadership (CNEAL) this week released a report detailing recommendations for the incoming Trump Administration on ways to secure and grow the benefits that nuclear energy can provide while minimizing its risks.

The Commission, launched by the Council on Strategic Risks, is co-chaired by Daniel Poneman and Sherri Goodman, and is comprised of U.S. leaders and experts across critical sectors, including climate change, nuclear energy, defense and national security, organized labor, and foreign policy. Its mission is to “restore US leadership in civilian nuclear technology to meet energy, climate, and national security needs for the 21st century” at the highest levels of safety, security, and nonproliferation.

The report finds that strengthening U.S. nuclear leadership domestically and internationally constitutes a national security imperative as well as an essential element to meeting the Nation’s long-term energy and emissions-reduction goals. It calls for action on day one, during the first 100 days, and at the one-year mark of the Trump Administration.

“Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a robust and durable bipartisan consensus supporting the need to restore America’s nuclear leadership on the world stage,” said Poneman. “The time to translate that consensus into large-scale investments and concrete action is now.”

Poneman also serves as co-chair and Sherri Goodman serves on the Expert Council of the Nuclear Energy and National Security Coalition (NENSC).
