Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
The College of Medicine has been alive with activity this summer! Our third-year students were recently on campus for their two-week intensive course
Prerequisite to the Clinical Curriculum, affectionately called “Bootcamp,” in reference to their acquisition of some basic clinical skills. My thanks to the clinical faculty who volunteered their time to teach students these skills. What fun everyone had! Our fourth year “senior” students have begun their sub-internships and electives and are diligently preparing for the residency match process. We look forward to welcoming the first and second year students for the start of the new academic year.
As the long days of summer begin to wane, I am excited about the upcoming year for all of our students, and I am thankful for the faculty and staff who continue to work long hours to care for patients, write grants and do research, teach, and strategically imagine the future of the College of Medicine.
Warmly,
Elisabeth H. Young, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Vice President for Health Affairs
Dean, College of Medicine

Prerequisite to the Clinical Curriculum gets students excited for their M3 year
|
|
The Prerequisite to the Clinical Curriculum course (formerly known as Boot Camp), provides hands-on training of technical skills for M3 students leading up to the start of their clerkships.
Over the two-week span of this course, many clinical faculty members from across our affiliated hospitals participated in and led training sessions for the students. This is always one of the students' favorite courses as they get to not only practice their technical skills, but they also get to interact closely with the clinical faculty. Highlights from the course are shown below.

College of Medicine Strategic Planning Update
|
The College of Medicine strategic planning process is well underway. The COM conducted a marketing analysis of stakeholders which included faculty, staff, clinical partners, and students. From this process, the data gathered will be used to inform the development of themes and actionable items for the COM strategic plan.
After a series of focus groups with stakeholders, the next steps in the plan development are as follows:
- The Strategic Planning Task Force will review all critical documents that were published in the last year including the independent student analysis, faculty satisfaction data, and faculty compensation and LCME reports.
- Scheduled visits to a few clinical and educational partners to validate the Task Force’s themes.

Task Force members Dr. Janet Holliday, Dr. Hans Thewissen, Emily Murphy, Dr. Brett Schofield and M4 student Gretchen Ferber review strategic planning documents.
