Joe G x Novartis HQ in Switzerland

Joe Gizzo spent his summer in Basel, Switzerland, working as part of the Customer Experience & Engagement Team at Novartis HQ. The Glow Up recently had a chance to sit down with Joe and talk to him about this amazing experience working abroad on the client side of the business.

Here is an excerpt from our edited conversation from his time in Switzerland:

What’s some of the things that surprised you when you moved to Switzerland?

When I first went to Novartis, I didn’t realize that the corporate campus is like a city. If you're in Basel, and you're looking at the central city, on the side of the river you see one building that has a Novartis logo on it. So when I was first going there, I was like, “Ohh, that's Novartis.”

I didn't realize that the whole city surrounding it was also Novartis. That their campus is literally a city in and of itself. It even has its own grocery store, and it actually dips across the nearby border into France, since they needed so much space.

Also, this is literally most expensive country in the world. So I had to buy Swiss chocolate for people back home and that was a quick $200 for just those gifts.

How has it been working in this new role?

I've been working on many of same projects but just on the client side. It’s been a great experience for me and think it was helpful for the team with me there to have some of these important discussions together in the office.

For instance, if you're tracking down someone from the GMC team, it's a lot easier to approach them one-on-one or with a Novartis email account, so you're just able to push things along faster, which was the whole purpose of me coming here.

What’s one thing that you are going to miss when you return home at the end of the summer?

So the biggest thing that I will miss about Basel is the Rhone river. That river is like the epicenter of the city. They do everything on that river. And I love it.

You're sitting in a meeting room overlooking the river, and there’s everything from boat tours to people water skiing, swimming, or sunbathing. And floating is a valid form of commuting here. If you live upriver from where you work, people will literally throw their clothes in a dry bag, hop in the river, float downstream, and then get off at any number of stairs that they have set up.

They have a level of cleanliness there and you can't do that in the Hudson. At least I would recommend against it unless you really want to get some sort of sickness.

ASK OPS

Why does my brand’s folder structure look totally different in Egnyte?

The recent changes to the folder organization are designed to ensure compliance with IPG Health standards aimed at strengthening our resources in areas such as data and security compliance, interoperability, and working with shared services.

Some of your brands have already been updated to the new folder structure, and please be on the lookout for emails from Mardene and Jesse about the remaining transition schedule.

For scheduling changes, please reach out to the Operations department, or learn more about the Egnyte folder restructure by accessing the training video and presentation here by scrolling down to the Egnyte/Folder Structure Training folder.

How do I reserve a desk when visiting the agency?

IT CORNER

Here at IPG, we like to make every interaction with our clients unique, even including how they connect to our Guest WiFi. So throw out your old way of thinking with one username and password for all guests and open your mind to a whole new variety of credentials.

Now each time a client or visitor to the agency needs access to WiFi, you will need to pre-create a guest account, which conveniently comes standard with one account supporting up to 5 devices. Our previously shared instructions have all the info you need for creating these accounts as well as a handy template to copy and paste the credentials into for you to print and leave in the conference room for the duration of their visit.
