NEPA Miners Explode in Pre-Season Finale!

Miners benefited Three Organizations in Victory

Scranton, PA - July 15th, 2013

Game Recap: Northeastern Pennsylvania football fans had a great night at Scranton Memorial Stadium.  The NEPA Miners erupted for the third highest point total in the organizations history whole shutting out the New Haven Venom 57-0. The Miners had strong performances by Ahmad Shuler with ten carries for 120 yards and three touchdowns along with Cameron Beatty making his first start at quarterback going 5 of 6 for 114 yards and three passing touchdowns. The Defense flourished with nine team sacks and David Castillo had an Interception for a score while Matt Jones recovered a fumble for a score. Tim Kropa led the Special Teams with six extra points and a 22 yard field goal not to mention the biggest hit of the night saving a potential kickoff return. Head Coach Darrin McDowell also earned his first win as the Miners new Head Coach.

Community Service: Off the field the Miners started the night welcoming an International Gymnastics Camp from the Poconos consisting of 90 gymnasts to meet the team for autographs and photos. The Miners would later spend time with the South Side Steelers youth organization on the football field talking with the kids before warm-ups began. The Miners would start their game with an honorary Marley's Mission/NEPA Miners Captain of the week. "It is a rewarding feeling to be able to use football as our vehicle to give back to the youth in North East PA, the Miners fan base in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas is growing with the great efforts of our Board of Directors and our entire organization," stated Miners founder Dan LaMagna.

Looking Ahead: The Miners will take their 1-1 pre-season/non-league record into regular season action Saturday as the Miners make their Empire Football League debut versus the Watertown Red & Black who are the oldest semi-professional football team in the nation established in 1896. They also have the most wins with 553 and despite a slow start this season losing 30-6 on the road versus the Syracuse Shock, Watertown will be a tough challenge at their home field. The Red & Black are led by rusher Joe Brennan who has 3,690 career rushing yards just more than 1,000 short of the team record. The Miners defense must stay aggressive while remaining disciplined to contain Brennan. The pass rush led by Corey Homer, John Kudey and Donovan Palmer provided plenty of pressure and sacks in the pre-season. On the offensive side the Miners will look to build on Ahmad Shuler's first 100 yard game of the season with Cameron Beatty managing the offense and its many receiving targets. After Watertown the Miners will return home July 27th versus the Vermont Ice Storm.
