Next Person Up
by Michael Hyland, Executive Director
There’s an expression used throughout the sports world labeled - “Next Man Up”. For those that follow any team sport, you’ll notice that whenever an impact player is injured or otherwise unable to play, the coach will say to the press that his or her team possesses a “next man up” philosophy.
It's an easy way to say that the team in question doesn’t rely on just one player – but rather embodies the concept of Team above all by readying and preparing all players to rise to the top when the moment arrives. Look no further than the textbook example of when Tom Brady went down in the early part of the 2008 season, and a no-name quarterback named Matt Cassel led the Pats to an 11-5 season. Remember, Matt Cassel never started a football game in college at Quarterback while attending USC. Cassel did start as a H Back for the Trojan football team and a few games as a pitcher for the baseball team. A very unlikely hero.
The sports world borrowed the concept from the military, as great leaders during wartimes realize the worst of the action is at the front, and replacements must fill in constantly and consistently during the most difficult times on a campaign. Next man up. And in each case, the replacement must be trained, and must understand the role of his or her team, while performing the task as well as the person they replace. That’s a lot to ask someone – be as good and able as the star player or more experienced soldier.
So how does this relate to NEPPA members you wonder? Well, are you training your replacement? Are you mentoring and offering sage advice to the ‘Next Man up’? And while I’m at it – let's change this to Next Person Up! The work force of the future can't simply step in unless they are included in decision making, able to learn from your tutelage today what they will need to put into action when you’re out the door. Don’t wait for your season ending injury like Tom Terrific. Do it now. Get your staff involved in the various committees and subcommittees to learn from others. Send them to the Roundtables as NEPPA begins to kick start them again. Bring them to the conference. When the vital position opens, you’ll be glad you did.

Braintree, MA, July 2022 – BELD has been Braintree’s electric provider for 130 years. The world has changed considerably since then, but we still pride ourselves on offering superior service at low rates to all the residents and businesses of Braintree.
While the average residential customer in Massachusetts uses approximately 750 kWh per month, your use may be higher or lower depending on the number and types of appliances that you are using. Powertech Associates is celebrating 30 years in business in 2022. I remember starting the business in my garage in June of 1992 as if it was yesterday. We started with one product line from TE/Raychem and a strong desire to provide our customers with the best solutions in the industry.
Initially, we focused on underground distribution systems with major New England utilities. As the months and years progressed, we acquired other product lines that complemented and expanded our offerings.
Our main goal has always been to provide our customers with the latest technology solutions in the Utility industry. We have grown to 10 employees and added UPSC, our distribution arm, to supply the demand for our products and to streamline the buying process.
I always stress to our team that “Customers have choices, “ and in our business timely solutions and product performance is of the upmost importance to our customers.
I would personally like to thank our principles and customers for their trust and support over the last 30 years. We would not exist without you and we look forward to continuing to serve your needs in the future.
With gratitude,
Bill Campbell
President
