I grew up in southwest Philadelphia – one of seven boys. We hated each other. I was # 6 in the line of seven boys, and I was picked on incessantly by five older brothers. I slept in a room with two of my brothers until the day I went into the Air Force Academy. Injuries and broken bones were the norm. My list alone includes a broken hand, thumb, ankle, nose and I actually broke my right forearm on my brother Chris’s head. We hated each other. My father tried to alleviate the situation with boxing gloves, hockey and lacrosse, football, and we regularly wrestled on the living room carpet, more than once breaking a sofa or a lamp. We hated each other. More than once I ran away from home, thinking it would have some affect on the other 6 brothers, somehow making them kinder and gentler towards me. However, upon my return I typically was in a headlock within a few minutes and trying to punch my way out. We hated each other. I was picked on once by a neighborhood bully – a year or two older than me and one that didn’t mind a good scrap. Well, brothers found out and that never happened again. Through all the fights, scars, broken bones and bloody noses – we loved each other. My father told the seven of us that reputation mattered. We had the misfortune of watching my eldest brother die with cancer, along with my mother and father. We came together.
Now I still hear the words in my ears today as when I was 10 years old. My father told us that we should ‘stick together when times get tough’. Well, times are tough. Gas prices, supply chain, workforce... the list is quite long and by no means getting any shorter in the near future. It’s time to stick together.

- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate & Natural Resources Committee Chairman Joe Manchin (D-WV) are quietly discussing possible options for advancing energy and climate legislation.
- The most recent discussion included Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) who has been a known hurdle but has also not been engaged in talks with Democratic leadership since last year.
