JANUARY GREETINGS
Greetings! I hope you were able to enjoy the holiday season and are ready to welcome the New Year. Happy New Year and thank you for everything you are each doing to make my term so memorable. I am enjoying getting to know you better and am grateful for all that I am learning.
We had about 20 members present for the December Teachers' Exchange meeting. Many questions were asked and many ideas were shared. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Many thanks to our Teachers' Exchange chair,
Dianne Impallaria, and to
Barbara Lieurance for helping to moderate.
For those of you who read the newsletters on laptops, you can use the 'In this Issue' section (top left of the newsletter) to go directly to a specific article or section (click on the topic). Unfortunately, the 'jump directly' feature is not yet available on mobile devices so for those of us who read the newsletter on our mobile devices, we must scroll down to get to the various sections.
Important news and dates to keep in mind:

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, JANUARY 23 The Editions Committee, chaired by Sandra Rosenblum, will present "Preludes: Versatility for Pedagogy and Performance". She will be joined by committee members, Deborah Yardley Beers, Sivan Etedgee and Miriam Gargarian. Please scroll down to read short biographies about each of these committee members.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting on Monday, January 23rd. As a New Year's wish for each of you - and for the world at large, I'd like to share a traditional Indian blessing,
Sarve Bhavantu, that one of my yoga teachers sings after class each week:
May all be happy.
May all be healthy.
May all taste the nectar of that is sweet in this life.
May no living being suffer.
Peace, peace, peace.
With extra warm greetings for this chilly time of the year,
Donna Gross Javel

In April 2015, Sivan was the featured soloist in George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with the University of New Hampshire Wind Symphony. Sivan's research has largely focused on Jewish composers who perished during the Holocaust. He was invited to present his paper "Viktor Ullmann's Variations on a Hebrew Folk-Song as a Means of Resistance" at the AMS meeting in 2011 and at Arizona State University's Jewish Music Conference in 2012. Since then, he has been researching and performing the music of Erwin Schulhoff. Sivan is currently a faculty member at the Newton Music Academy and has a home studio in Newton, MA.
Miriam Gargarian: After completing the Doctor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Indiana University, Bloomington, Miriam Gargarian taught piano, music history and piano pedagogy on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Since 1984 she has been teaching privately in Boston. She has performed in Paine Hall, Sanders Theatre, and Jordan Hall; and her performances have been aired on National Public Radio. A semifinalist as a pianist in the Ima Hogg National Young Artists Auditions in Houston, Texas; winner of the William S. Cooper Young Performers Award (from the Boulder Philharmonic Society); and winner of a Spencer Penrose Scholarship Award from the Central City (Colorado) Opera House Associations, she holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Colorado. Article Headline
Our Music Sale is back by popular demand, once again organized by Ruth Ross, Music Library and Donation Chair. Please join us prior to all regular meetings in September, October, January, February, March and May. Please note that the music sales take place at The First Parish starting at 9AM. Members are asked to bring their checkbooks and any music that they are willing to donate that morning.

Ruth Ross
Music Library and Donation Chair

The sale serves three purposes:
- Teachers have access to music that, perhaps, has gone out of print
- Standard teaching methods and collections can be acquired at a very reasonable price
- All proceeds go directly to the NEPTA Scholarship Fund

PARKING ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Watertown Savings Bank has strongly requested that NEPTA members do not park in the bank parking lot for NEPTA events. Please be respectful of this neighboring business and leave the free parking for its clients.
Please be aware that Watertown has restricted parking on the side streets immediately surrounding the First Parish and thus eliminating any "free parking." The metered spots in the parking lot adjacent to the church can accept coins up to a maximum of 8 hours (blue meters only), thereby removing the need to go feed the meter during our meeting breaks, offering instead an opportunity to socialize with NEPTA friends and colleagues.
