Hello Gerald,

A pair of RS-3's on Steve Kay's Lackawanna Terminal Railway

Join us March 20-23 for NERx

The NMRA Northeastern Region invites you to NERx, a virtual convention being held March 20-23 on YouTube and Facebook. Each evening will feature Clinics, Layout Tours, Tips 'n Tricks, a Model Showcase, and Roundtable Discussions.

The NERx schedule of clinics, layout tours, and roundtable discussions are included below in this newsletter.

Tips 'n Tricks will be sprinkled throughout the event, the Model Showcase will precede the Roundtable Discussions, and the Miniprints and Inter-Action Hobbies drawings for $50 gift vouchers will occur on March 23 at 8:45 PM.

But first let's tell you where to watch NERx and highlight a few things to see!

There are two options for watching NERx live on the internet. In either case, look for the stream that says it is currently live. Just as the train is sometimes late to the station, if you do not see that the live stream has started, please hit refresh until the train arives.

Steve Kay's Lackawanna Terminal Railway

One of the layouts being featured during NERx is the Lackawanna Terminal Railway

The Lackawanna Terminal Railway was created during the formation of Conrail in 1976. Initially, the railroad took over all the costly local and yard switching in the major cities from Hoboken to Buffalo eventually rebuilding most of the old DL&W mainline to compete with Conrail for Buffalo to Metropolitan regional rail traffic.

The area modeled is from Binghamton to Buffalo in 1986.

Researching and Modeling an East River Ferryboat Landing

by Joe Bux & Ed Koehler

Many of us know of New York City Mayor Hylan’s war against the trolley and

rapid transit companies using the 5¢ fare as a weapon; but did you know it

also extended to the now long gone ferryboats that once crossed the East

River?

In this clinic we will reprise the research to create an accurate model of

one of these vessels and the shorefront facilities where it would dock.

Designing Operations on a Small Layout and

How Operations Can Guide Your layout Design

by John Valachovic

This clinic discusses how wanting to build an operator's layout in a small space was accomplished. The principles discussed in this clinic can be applied to almost any small layout. Factors such as people placement, traffic control, and operating paperwork are covered in the clinic. John explains how his own preferences for operating on layouts guided his design and operating scheme. The design of the layout allows for a small group of 3-4 operators to run the layout all the way up to 7-9 operators. The different job types are covered from locals to yard operations and how he has tailored those jobs to the size of the layout. He includes how he worked in design elements to slow the pace of the session so there would be plenty of work for a 2.5 - 3 hour session without bogging it down. There are a lot of good take aways for builders and designers of all size layouts in this clinic.

Photo Interpretation for Model Makers

by James Whatley, MMR

Many modellers use Photo Interpretation. This presentation covers basic methods, tips, and techniques to simplify building accurate models from prototype photos. Included are camera and lens choices, taking pictures in the field, using existing pictures from books or elsewhere, software enhancement, scaling photos, confirming dimensions using known features or field measurements, and making a drawing and / or directly building a model. Common pitfalls to avoid are included. Examples of models built and scaled using the methods discussed are included.

Operations Weekend

Artie Krass, leading the discussion, asks the panelists... Have you ever participated in an Operations Weekend? Operations Weekend? What's that?

Ever thought of organizing an Operations Weekend?

How about being a host for an Operations Weekend?

Or what it is like to operate at such a weekend?

Whether it is Island Ops on Long Island, Ops til You Drop in Syracuse, 'OP'toberfest in Albany, or Op Around the Clock in Rochester, you will have plenty of opportunities around the NER. New this year will be the HUB Division's High Green, replacing a long standing RailRun event. Come hear the organizers of these events talk about what opportunities are available to organizers, hosts and operators of all experience levels.

Artie will be joined by Ed O'Connell, Bruce Robinson and Jim Schweitzer

The Impact of New Media in Model Railroading

John Doehring will be leading this roundtable discussion about the impact of new media in model railroading.

Social Media has made a huge impact in our hobby, from a growing number of Podcasts, to YouTube Channels and now the NMRA Interchange has given members a chance to connect like never before. Come listen to how our panel is using social media to promote the hobby and grow model railroading.

John will be joined by Lionel Strang (Podcast), Gordy Robinson (NMRAx), Heath Hurwitz (YouTube), Chris Adams (Facebook) and Jordan Kramer (Discord)

Conventions in NER

Every year the Northeastern Region of the NMRA holds a convention. This year, the host division is the Sunrise Trail Division. Members Dennis DeAngelis, John Feraca, Kevin Katta will provide highlights of this year's convention, the Cannonball Express 2023

Another convention in the NER this year is the Fundy Rail Fest. Joining us on NERx are members of the Eastern Canada Division, Greg Williams, Steve McMullin, and Lou McIntyre to tell us about their event. The show is co-hosted with the Saint John Society of Model Railroaders and the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders

Visit the NERx Website!

NERx has its own website that will be updated as information becomes available with the schedule, descriptions, and photos of clinics, layout tours, and models. The website also has links to the videos of the prior NERx events and will have links to the live streams on the days of the event.

What is the website? NERx.org, of course! The website will keep changing as details become finalized. So, bookmark it today!

There is no cost to attend the virtual event. Instead, we are asking for donations to support NER programs such as the NERx Virtual Convention.
