NETC Allied Nursing students participate in Simulation Week

Dale is a Dummy. 

So is Millie.

They are not any type of dummies, but human replicas that can blink and "breathe" providing registered nursing students at Northeastern Technical College practice before entering the real medical world.

Dale is receiving bedrest for cirrhosis of the liver at Northeastern Technical College's replica hospital wing while Millie is suffering from symptoms of a urinary tract infection.

"Simulations in nursing classes are important because they allow students to practice real-life scenarios in a safe and controlled environment, preparing them for actual patient care," said NETC Simulation Instructor Lori Rivers. "One of the goals of these exercises is to teach our students to work as a team in order to care for a patient."

Phlebotomy students begin live training

The Northeastern Technical College classroom seemed warmer and quieter than usual as concentration and trust builds among the students during the right of passage of phlebotomy – the live stick.

NETC Instructor Bridget Graham sat between Davis and Williams coaching them along the process. Before switching to the hot seat, Williams, who is recertifying, properly drew blood on the first try from Davis, who is new to the procedure.

"Right there. There is the vein. It's a good one. Can you feel it?" Graham asked Davis, who touched Williams' arm just below the crook of her arm. Graham asked her students why they can't search for a vein with their thumbs.

"Thumbs have a pulse," they said.

With butterfly syringe ready and coil properly gripped, Davis aimed the needle for Williams' vein; Williams took a breath.

Singelton receives NETC's first

Commercial Transportation certificate

Tiffany Singleton picked at her lunch watching 18-wheelers roll in and out of Stanely Tools wondering what sights their drivers saw traveling the countryside before dropping cargo in Cheraw.

Singleton, 34, of Wallace, enrolled at Northeastern Technical College's popular commercial driver's license program in January and sat on a waiting list. In March, her employer announced it was leaving Chesterfield County with her end date playing a game of chicken against a potential start date at NETC.

Singleton prayed.
