Summaries of timely road safety news, events, and alerts

Message from NETS' Executive Director,
Susan Hipp

I attended a conference recently and saw a presentation focused on fleet safety regulations. One of the presenters commented in response to a question, “There’s no regulation that a tire has to be round, but it works pretty well.”

Sometimes, something is so obvious it doesn’t need rules and instructions (anyone want to try square tires??)

Other times, something is obvious but still needs to be regulated (seatbelts save lives, yet in the US we are still short of 100% usage despite regulation and data that backs this up.)

And then there are times regulations and instructions make all the difference in addressing an issue (anyone remember cigarette vending machines where you could buy a pack no matter how old you were??)

When it comes to your fleet safety program, where do you stand? Do you have obvious program elements that don’t need regulation such as required technology in your vehicles that keeps drivers safe like automatic emergency braking (AEB) or lane departure warnings? Do you have policies in place that are also obvious but do need regulation such as a fatigue management policy which checks for employees who are too tired to drive, or guidelines against driving while impaired?

And how about this one for being obvious- are you benchmarking your program either against others in your industry or, even better, against other organizations outside your industry? If not, you’re missing an opportunity for an obvious method of improving fleet safety. By measuring your performance metrics and program elements against others, you can identify areas of improvement and learn best practices to strengthen your fleet safety program and help your drivers get home safely every day.

NETS’ annual Strength IN Numbers Benchmark process has already started and while the deadline has passed for data collection, extensions are being granted for any organization who would like to participate and needs more time. And if you’re not a NETS member, I encourage you to contact us to learn more about the benchmark and how NETS can help your fleet safety program: a benchmark-only membership is ONLY $349 per year!

Don’t miss this obvious opportunity to advance your fleet safety program. Join NETS Benchmark, and skip the square tires!
