Message from NETS' Executive Director, Joe McKillips
2018: Year in Review

As we wind down yet another eventful year I hope 2018 has been one of success and progress for you and your organization’s road safety program. I also want to thank our many NETS members for their support and contributions during what has been a year filled with special milestones and unique road safety endeavors.

Reflecting back, one of our earliest highlights involved the launch of our comprehensive Cost of Crashes (CoC) app designed in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of our long-standing NETS-NHTSA cooperative agreement. Use of the calculator will help road safety professionals develop a business case of support and sustainability to address their many road safety needs and challenges.

Building on the idea of helping employers quantify road safety risk, NETS also partnered with the National Safety Council (NSC) to support our existing Benchmark team in helping provide valuable insight and perspective to our cornerstone NETS Strength IN Numbers ® Benchmark Report.  Collaboration with NSC enabled NETS to deepen our analysis and historical correlation in the cause-and-effect relationship between road safety program elements and crash performance.

Expansion of our already distinguished NETS Board of Directors also took center stage with the addition of Toyota, North America to the NETS Board. This was a notable development and positioned NETS to make an even greater impact with members and non-members alike in the area of safe vehicle design and technology.

Highlighting the year's momentum was our 2018 STRENGTH IN NUMBERS® Annual Benchmark Conference which saw record attendance at the event held in Frisco, Texas. A top-flight line-up of conference presentations delivered by keynote speakers along with NETS members and sponsors alike highlighted one of our most comprehensive set of conference proceedings in recent memory. Three additional road safety organizations also joined the ranks of our valued Sponsor Partners  enabling NETS to further expand and share road safety expertise with conference attendees.

Not to be overlooked, NETS also launched its first-ever Drive Safely Work Week campaign focused specifically on the unique crash potential posed by Backing and Parking. Extensive back-office work was also completed on a comprehensive employer seat-belt engagement and awareness campaign planned for launch in the new year.

As we closed 2018, plans were also unveiled announcing the exciting expansion of our first-ever NETS international road safety satellite conference planned April 2-3rd in San Jose, Costa Rica. Building upon our focused strategic initiatives, the Latin America NETS conference will enable NETS member companies and sponsors, as well as non-member organizations, the opportunity to convene and discuss road safety challenges unique to the Latin America region. Planning efforts for the event are well underway with early conference steering committee support being received from NETS Board companies and members alike. Organizations with road safety business operations across Latin America are encouraged to SAVE-THE-DATE for this inaugural event with a preliminary agenda and registration portal planned for launch early next year.

Thank you again for your time and dedication to road safety and for all you do to help support the NETS mission of reducing risk and saving lives.

We look forward to extending our momentum into the New Year and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
